I was talking w/ someone today who mentioned it might have something to do w/ a patch/early bug in the code... does that make sense to anyone? The Xbox is a couple of years old now (in fact looking it up I ordered it 2 years ago yesterday
) and I don't have Xbox Live so any updates that may be loaded via that I don't have. Do those of you who aren't having a problem w/ things like Halo2 have newer machines and/or live? Are there updates downloaded when you connect to live?

Another update... I discovered a thread over on the Xbox forum (I'd give a link but you have to have any account in order to even view the forums
) and it seems this is a known problem. I guess those of you who aren't having problems are just lucky...

nemein - my bro-in-law just recently got a Sony 40" LCD TV and he has the same "problem" as you. We played around with it one night but all of the games were only showing in 4:3 even in the higher resolutions with the component cable. I just assumed that the games didn't support 16:9 mode. We tried Halo 2 and Ninja Gaiden. It doesn't seem like anyone here has a definitive answer either. If you figure out a way to display these games in widescreen please post back.

This "glitch" sounds very suspicious to me Nemein. Take ur XB to a friend's place that already has it, take it to u bought it from and ask them if they can hook it up to a TV and see if it'll work. I dunno the whole thing is fishy.
Show me the tv u got.

If it was just me I might be inclined to agree w/ you. However, sign up to the Xbox forum and take a look for yourself http://forums.xbox.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=11045288 There are several people who are experiencing the same thing.

I'm pretty sure there was a Halo 2 widescreen glitch that was patched via XBox Live. I think bungie even had a press release on their web site when it was discovered and then another one when they patched it.

It's not just a Halo2 glitch... for those of us who are having the problem it's any 480p/i game that is supposed to be in 16x9. I guess part of the problem as to why it's taking so long to figure out what the issue is and how to fix it is that there doesn't seem to be any commonality/pattern yet (atleast that I can figure from reading through the threads on the Xbox site).

Looks like if you are running into this problem you're SOL. The official response (well as official as it seems to get in the aforementioned thread on the Xbox forum) is:
I asked for explaination of how I'm supposed to "manually adjust" a 4:3 signal to make it 16:9
To everyone experiencing the issue originally brought up by tarmacslave and xyzzy41001, the Xbox team investigating the situation has reached a conclusion and has the following to report:
Thanks to all of you for providing such detailed information.
After reviewing this with our team, we have determined that some newer ED/HD monitors conform to 4:3-to-16:9 mode switching signal standards adopted after the Xbox was released. Because no established standard for alerting a monitor to a 480p wide-screen mode switch existed at the time Xbox was developed, the console does not send a mode-switch signal while outputting in 480p mode. The console does send such a mode-switch signal while in 480i mode, as an established signal standard did exist for this mode when the Xbox was developed.
This is not an incompatibility between the Xbox and the HDTV monitor; it simply means that for some monitors, the aspect ratio of the display will need to be adjusted manually to fit the widescreen 480p mode.
We will take your feedback into account in the development of future Xbox products.
Thanks and best regards,
Xbox Support Team
