Scary games?

Anybody know of any games really good horror games for either the cube or the x-box? Eternal Darkness was my favorite game of all time, but I found it to be more action / adventure than horror. Resident evil 4 is pretty damn good too but feels more like a shooter to me. How is Silent Hill 4?

The scariest game I think I ever played was dungeons of daggorath for the TRS-80, but nobody here probably ever played that back in the day.

My wife's all into the scary games, and I know she'd recommend the Fatal Frame games in a heartbeat.

Fatal Frame and Fatal Frame II: You only have a camera to protect yourself from ghosts.

Silent Hill 2: I'm assuming it's like all other Silent Hills

I also highly recommend the Fatal Frame games. IMO the scariest games made, at least for a console.

I've played fatal frame 1 and the terrible dub really takes you out of the experience.

I would recommend Silent Hill 2, excellent story. You can't beat the SH games for general atmosphere and sense of wrongness. Silent Hill 3 is also great but PS2 only.

Silent Hill 4 is probably the weakest of the 4.

Well, the original Resident Evil (well, the remake version) is much scarier then part 4.

System Shock 2 for PC. While it doesn't really have the "jump out of your skin" moments that Resident Evil has, no other game has totally creeped me out in terms of overall atmosphere. Silent Hill has come close at times, but System Shock 2 is hands down the champion in my book.

I thought Silent Hill 3 was the best in the series. Unfortunately, as someone above posted, Silent Hill 4 is the worst. I bought it when it came out, played it for about 30 minutes, and haven't gone back. I just don't like it.

Thief: Deadly Shadows is an Xbox game that I'd say has a good creepy atmosphere, though not real "scares".

Me too, I was like 10 at the time.

For anybody who cares, dungeons of daggorath was a cartridge based game for the TRS-80 color computer. Basically it was a first person dungeon crawl with a few twists. The sound was very creepy for the day and black and white 2-D polygon graphics just added to the atmosphere. Some of the monsters even on the first level were much more power than your character starting out, and they had a habit on sneaking up on you from behind. The game was sort of slow paced and controlled only by keyboard commands, meaning that when you were being attacked you had to be johhny lightning with the keyboard.

Also, You used torches to see that would burn out and Instead of having hit points or a life gauge, your life was measured by your heart beat which you could hear and see on screen. If it got to fast you would faint and if you were attacked after that your heartbeat would stop and you would die.

thanks for the reccomendations!

I kind of agree SH3 is the best in a series, particularly from a technical perspective (those in game cutscenes are amazing, is this really running on a ps2?). I did think SH2 had an overall more enthralling story and characters, and it was just very original. You can't beat pyramid head as a bad guy. Either way it's the best SH game available on xbox .

Who else would like a SH1 remake (ala MGS on the GC).

pick up the Resident Evil remake on Gamecube, scariest RE in the bunch (though RE4 is the best IMO), also get Resident Evil 0.

Fatal Frame is pretty good too, though not as scary, it has a lot of scary atmospheric type things in it.

I'm glad i'm not the only one, after completing Silent Hill 1,2 and 3 I was really excited about the 4th coming out. It's still sat there in my collection not even half finished.
Then i purchased Resident Evil (game cube) and I have been playing that non-stop!

Another vote for System Shock 2, although it's been a long time since i've played it. (And it's for the PC.)

For a more recent game, how about The Suffering? I've heard a lot about the level "Cradle" in the game Thief being very scary.

Awesome! You've clearly come to the right place.

Dungeons of Daggorath ruled a good chunk of my childhood. There's a PC remake of it somewhere, you know.

I've got to agree with a lot of people here. As far as the xbox goes, the Fatal Frame games are your best bet.

For the cube, Resident Evil remake has quite a few jumps, and amazing graphics.

The scariest game I've ever played is easily System Shock 2 for the PC. Everyone who suggested it is right.

The Silent Hill games are all pretty good. Silent Hill 4 is one of the weaker ones in the series, but don't let it discourage you to much. It isn't as bad as it's made out to be, and if you're a fan of the other games in the series you really shouldn't miss it.
