KOTOR 2: It sucks!

Well, "enjoying" KOTOR 2 is kind of doubtful whether or not you've played KOTOR 1.

But no, you don't need to play them in order. If you do, you'll probably understand the historic backdrop a little better, and you'll certainly recognize a things (a few of the main characters in KOTOR 1 have cameos in KOTOR 2, and a few of the locations are reused, though changed.) But it shouldn't be a hindrance if you don't.

I loved KOTOR 2....I liked it maybe a little more than the first one. Didn't run into any glitches with part 2 either.

I doubt it, but given KOTOR 1 is $20 and is considered by most to be the superior game I see no reason not to play it first.

I'd definitely play KOTOR first if only because it is no where near as buggy, and a bit more of a consistant experience over all than 2. KOTOR 2 does a few things better, but omg the bugs..
