Please just be backwards compatible with broadband connectivity. PLEASE! The rest would just be gravy as far as I'm concerned!
|
They have definately pledged to make the next gen backwards compatible. Both Nintendo and Sony know that this is an essential feature in order to keep their installed user base. I don't know if MS confirmed whether they were or not, last I heard no.
I think what they may do is allow GC controllers to be used with the next console. This would provide a more familiar controller along with their revolutionary one. I assume memory cards would still be the same since it will be backwards compatible. I don't know about the HD. If they do have one I hope it isn't really used for saving. I much prefer memory cards since they are much more transportable and worlds more reliable. If they come out with the SD adapter they were planning then memory wouldn't be an issue as a 512 SD card can be had for about $30 now. |
That post with the drawing is hilarious.
I heard that Nintendo is making it so that you can actually lick the controller to convey different tastes thus adding to your heightened sensory illusion. Oh and the game discs will be edible too. |

Saw this today at cheapassgamer, have no idea the validity of it, but thought it would be interesting to discuss. It kind of goes along with Rumor 4 posted by jeffdsmith. Here is the video you need real player to view.
http://sonix.sdv.fr:8080/ramgen/arte...3/immersion.rm It's one of the coolest things I have seen lately. The guy who posted it said they mention Nintendo 21 in the video. |
Another classic and underrated Dreamcast game I loved, especially with 4 people, is Ooga Booga... playing leprechauns vs. Abe Lincolns in boar polo was hilarious!!
I'd love to see this on a next-gen system. |

% QUOTE=Josh Hinkle]That's not good logic as I can't recall any system that was backward compatible before the PS2. So it's not like everyone was doing it but Nintendo back then.
They already made the GBA backwards compatible with GB/GBC and the DS with the GBA. The only way I see the Revolution not being backwards compatible is if the controller is so different that it's not possible. As for the head start for MS, it won't matter if they don't have any killer software (ala the Saturn). They really need Halo 3 out by the time the PS3 and Revolution launch, and prefereably a while before to get a user base built up.[/QUOTE] Before I start on my response Josh, I would definitely be what most would call a Nintendo Fanboy as besides the original NES I had the other 3 systems on launch date so Nintendo is my choice. As someone else stated Atari had already done backwards compatibility and as you stae Nintendo did do it with their portables but I do not see them doing it here. If they do I too will be estatic but I do not see it happening. We should know almost 99.9% for sure in 3 months though at E3 whether or not. Anything now is just speculation. As far as your killer software remark I partially agree, take a look at the PS2 launch titles and honestly they did not have a stellar lineup at least what I can gather from the article I found below. Definitely none that would compare to a Halo ar GTA for sure. The 2 things that helped PS2 was that it came out before the other 2 which MS is trying to do here. The other was backwards compatibilty which is where though I think could in fact hurt XBOX2 since at the moment it appears that may not happen perhaps. That is what could hurt them as opposed to no killer software as you say. At present moment they will have a whole year almost of a headstart and that should give them plenty of time in 2006 to make sure Halo 3 gets out. http://www.spam-revolution.com/articles/ps2.htm

you are basing it on this article that is not concrete evidence to say the least. Now if you have read somewhere that the president or some other executive at Nintendo has stated this then please let me know. I only say this because in the newest issue of EGM(The Godfather cover), they have started a new column that will talk solely about the next-gen consoles and they state for Nintendo about backwards comp. the following: "Doubtful. No Nintendo console has ever included such a feature." True this is opinion but EGM has been a reputable force in the industry for 10+ years now and do have plenty of inside sources and I would think would have mentioned this "pledge" that you speak of. Microsoft as I stated they are not sure because of the way the hardware will be for the next system that they are unsure if this would even be a possiblility but is a definite mistake on their part I feel. |
I saw that in EGM, but I to read in interviews with Nintendo officials saying it would be backwards compatible. But I can't recall where I saw it either.
It's not a big deal for me as I'll keep my gc around for the GB player even in the revolution is backwards compatible. PS3 and X-box 2 are bigger deals as I don't have room to add them and keep the PS2 and X-box. But that's a moot point anyway as I'm not planning on buying anything but the new Nintendo console next gen as I just don't game enough anymore to justify buying all three again. |
I think backwards capability is doubtful as well. Why? If Revolution is going to have a standard player like the rest, whether it is DVD or HD-DVD, I doubt it could read GCN games. To my recollection, one of the piracy preventive measures was the way the games were burned/read. i.e. backwards from all other standards. I would think that would be quite a hurdle if they wanted to go with an already established format.
It would be nice though. |
I don't think they'll go witn an established format. They say HD-DVD, but I imagine it will end up being some kind of propritary format based on HD-DVD. Nintendo loves to charge third parties licensing fees and it thwarts piracy.
Maybe they'll just burn/read HD-DVD backwards. :D |

Do I have a source, no. But when the gamecube was released the heads at Nintendo stated several times that they would make future game systems backwards compatible since they will all be disc based. I have not seen any evidence to the contrary and have only seen Nintendo's support for backwards and cross platform compatability with all their handhelds being backwards compatible and the various game boy players. Only two of their consoles have not had potential backwards compatibility. The SNES wasn't backwards compatible but I think that it was not a popular decision and they wanted to start anew. Same with the N64, at that time retro gaming wasn't nearly as popular as it is now and both times they were confident that they would be the number one system. Now that installed user base is extremely important as both the GBA and PS2 can atest to. Again, I think backwards compatibility is extremely important and both Sony and Nintendo realize that. |

When you put a copy of the game in any other device you begin the game playing with all your skills, rank, etc. at level 0 but your first challenge is to defeat the end-boss. You'll lose everytime. :D |
There is an interview with Ken Lobb (of Rare/Nintendo fame) on IGN -xbox. He of course works for MS now. Anyway they ask him about the next Xbox. But b/c of his history with Nintendo they asked him a few Q's about that as well.
IGN: What do you think of Nintendo's Revolution? Lobb: I really don't know much about the Revolution. There's been some rumor about networking directly between consoles and maybe tilt functionality or something, but beyond that I really don't know much about the Revolution. I'm sure that Nintendo, as always, will try to do something that's innovative. For them, lately, I mean I love Nintendo, I'm a big fan of their games, but sometimes innovation can be borderline not necessarily what I want to play. I like games that are interesting and new. Katamari Damacy [for PS2], I was really excited it won a lot of [awards at DICE], it's a great game and I have a lot of respect for the people at Namco. But to me, that's a genre-like thing. I want to be able to play different genres on a console that also plays all the games that I'm familiar with [and play] with a control scheme that I'm used to. And again, just the way online has invaded my life and what I want to play on a daily basis, I also think that that's an area where the Revolution -- I'm not sure if [Nintendo] is going to go after it. IGN: Do you think Nintendo is afraid to compete directly against Microsoft and Sony? Lobb: I don't think Nintendo doesn't go after Sony and Microsoft because they're afraid or because they think they can't compete directly in this space, whether its online or a more traditional-style game or with licenses, etc. I think they always want to do something different and again, I'll always respect them for that. The market is filled with a lot of Me2 stuff and I am happy that they're out there giving it a go. As a console fan, I get concerned, [about what] that means for some of my favorite Nintendo IPs. |

He also said he would love to see Mario, Zelda and Metroid on Xbox. Sounds like he is still a fan despite working for MS, which is nice to see. |

3d it is?

Well, the latest seems to encompass just about every rumor heard so far, apparently this is closer to the source though... I don't know what to think. Pick up your salt on the way out... April 25, 2005 - In the middle of last week, the Broken Saint's website posted claims they knew the secret behind Nintendo's upcoming console, codenamed Revolution. Now, if it's one thing the Web isn't short on, it's people claiming they know what drives Nintendo's Revolution. What makes the claim on Broken Saints compelling, however, is that Brooke Burgess, the man behind the site, is actually in a position to know. Or at the very least, in a position where savory strips of information may be floating around, just waiting to be picked up by wary ears. Well, it looks like Broken Saints has gone and posted its much-anticipated theory on what makes the Nintendo Revolution revolutionary. At the core of the theory sits how Revolution will display games: through a form of real-time 3D projection. That's right folks, along the lines of a classic 50s monster movie. Nintendo itself has stated that what it plans to use on Revolution isn't all that unique, only that it has never been applied to videogames. Taking that into account, plus recent patents filed by Nintendo, and it doesn't sound all that far fetched, argues Burgess. If that's not enough, he goes on. During the ShoWest film conference, a panel featuring George Lucus, Robert Zemekis, James Cameron, Robert Rodriguez, and a satellite feed from Peter Jackson discuss their plans to integrate cheap digital stereoscopic 3D into major theater chains by 2007. Here's where things get interesting: Burgess claims to know an agent who spoke to Robert Rodriguez, stating they knew of a game machine that would exploit this new wave of 3D entertainment well before Hollywood could jump in on the market. Burgess goes on to say he spoke to an industry friend about his new theory, to which the industry friend said that Nintendo had shown a real-time 3D add-on for GameCube behind closed doors. When? At last year's Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. Furthermore, Burgess claims the Revolution will certainly sport wireless controllers, among other, unknown wireless capabilities. Also, according to Burgess, the Revolution controller will feature either a touch-screen or some form of proprietary PDA device. As for gyroscopic controllers, the Revolution will indeed use them. Burgess references several inside "sources" who claim they know Revolution controllers will support positional shifts as experienced in Kirby's Tilt 'n' Tumble. Not all games will support the feature, but Burgess states that at least one Revolution launch title will. This is all speculation, of course, but there you have it. |
The what now? Honestly that all sounds like all the speculation going around rolled into one "all you can eat" package. Whatever they're doing with the system, I have faith they'll do it right.. But 3D projection? I can't help but think of those bad Sega hologram games. If any of that is true it definitely sounds like they're going into a whole new direction with this thing.. but at the same time, since it's been CONFIRMED to be backwards compatible with Gamecube games, it's still got to be grounded to some degree to traditional gaming. Who wants to bet the next claim will be Smell-o-Vision?
|
I think 3-D is a bit of a stretch. One thing that points to a possible trouble point, is that Robert Rodriguez is using the blue/red (ie. comic book) form of 3D for his upcoming movie, while James Cameron will be using the polarized (ie. IMAX) much better version in a future film.
One would hope that Nintendo would use the better polarized version, but I'm not sure if that is even possible with today's TVs. I know that Cameron's film is requiring all theaters showing the movie (up to 1,000) to integrate "silver screens" which most new theaters don't have, but are required for displaying that type of 3D. Sounds a lot of factors must be standardized for this technology to work. With that said, I can just see Mario running around in ghosted in blue and red, while gamers where stupid glasses. Wait, no I can't - that stupid! Sounds like someone is fantasizing again. |
Josh, you don't remember Rad Racer?
It's harder to speculate on the new Nintendo system due to the wide-range of possibilities.. but the whole 3D thing is weird. It all seems too expensive or tied down to specialized hardware (outside of the actual console itself). Methinks people are starting to speculate a little too far-fetched on the whole thing, from crazy controllers to 3D projection, next we'll be hearing it plugs in directly to your brain! My speculation is simply this: The console will offer something unique while still remaining simple and accessible. |

Is there even a way to give games a more 3D look on a normal TV without requiring special glasses? No way Nintendo does 3D that requires glasses. |
