Retro Game Challenge #24 (1/9-1/16)

Week 24 is over!
The Rules:
  1. To enter, you just play one of the games and post a screenshot (F12 key in MAME) with your score.
  2. The deadline to post your high scores will be Sunday 9:00 PM Eastern US time.
  3. When you post a high score, pick a new game to play by the deadline. The sooner the better.
  4. The game should be at least 10 years old and one we haven't played before.
  5. Any scores you submit should be played during the week of the contest using no continues or any features of the emulator that you wouldn't get by playing the actual machine.
So far we have only been using MAME to play the games, but that can change, if the winner so chooses.
New to MAME? Feel free to ask questions here or read the tutorials
I am going to host the current ROMs and list of all the past winners and high scores here.

The Games:
(click the titles for info and how to play)

Cyberball 2072 (2 player, rev 4) - Score to beat: Roto 170000

Gun.Smoke (US set 2) - Score to beat: hardcore 70200

Karnov (US) - Score to beat: devilshalo 271500

The Prize:
Whoever gets the high score for one of the games picks the next game that replaces it, so we should always have 3 to choose from. You also get your name engraved permanently etched onto this eye catching trophy with a genuine Sharpie!

This Week's Winners:

I couldn't get Cyberball to load (a bunch of bins not found). The other two I got to run. They're addictive! I have to go to work now but I'll load it up tomorrow with my xarcade stick

I reuploaded Cyberball, but I think the file was ok. Make sure you are playing Cyberball 2072 (2 player, rev 4), and not Cyberball (rev 4) or any of the other clones.

Works at work, but can't get it to load at home. Guess I'll be playing this at lunchtime since the weather sucks.

I mean, it seems that the item you pick up are like power ups? I've used the ladder and the fire. Dunno what the shoes and bombs do.

I have no idea. Where the hell is hardcore? He picked it. I can't even get past the first level of the game I picked, let alone Karnov.

Ok, the here's what I came up with. What sucks is that on the keyboard. it scrolls thru the items at the bottom everytime you just want to move left of right. Hit spacebar to activate it.

Shoes = run faster
Ladder = climb up (can still fire)
Fire = Better flames (limited time)
Bomb = let's you place 1 bomb.
Boomerang = one time use (you don't get it back)
Wings = dunno since it's not an option on the first level it seems.
Semi-circle thingy = dunno.. not an option on this level.

The items scroll the same way with a joystick. That's just the way the game was designed...

As for items, I don't remember how they all work, but the shoes make you fast and jump really high. The boomerang can be used multiple times if you catch it. I believe you can beat the first boss by hitting him just once with the boomerang. The brown items (wings, mask, etc) can be used when you reach the appropriate place. The wings can be used in one spot on the second level. The wings let you fly, and the mask lets you see invisible items. Fire gives you 30 seconds of firepower. I don't remember bombs being that useful, but I believe there are spots where you have to take out a wall with them. Of course you can use them as a weapon if you want, but that's probably more trouble than it's worth...

Shoot the bottom out from under them, they collapse. I didn't have much of a problem with those

Yeah, I finally figured it out. After trying to run thru them. And I got to use the wings, but flying blind sucks because I landed right on the boss.

The only thing I know about Karnov is to never stop shooting.

I tried the lower route.. too tough.. the higher route seems easier but you fly blind into the enemies.

It's no 10 Yard Fight, but pretty fun nonetheless...

Lampei, how did you make it to stage 3 of Karnov with only 99K points? I had around 120K after finishing the first level...

That was actually the third strike, but I took the screen capture before it gave me the last strike.

Do you find the defensive plays easier? I don't find I really know what to do with myself for them. Sometimes I can do nothing and they will screw up, but others they seem unstoppable.
