Good.
What does it mean that they have 20% of Ubisoft now?
Should we be worried about that?

The difference, of course, is that the NFL pretty much said they were going exclusive, and opened up the bids. NBA didn't, and it was unsolicited.

Hopefully it won't mean we'll have fucking hiphop on the next Splinter Cell, and rap on the next Rainbow Six game. EA better not mess up Ubi. Ghost Recon, Ghost Recon Island Thunder, Ghost Recon 2, Rainbow Six, and the Splinter Cell games are pretty close to perfect (or as close as they can be) and don't need EA to f them up.

I think it was EA's suggestion of including a Ron Artest cage match in NBA Live 2006 that really soured the deal.

Probably means we'll have a slightly tweaked Rainbow Six 2005, then 2006, then 2007 and so on. Ubisoft actually seems to put out sequels fairly quick, but I'd guess with EA's mentality they will be pumping out even more.

Actually, the first discussions between EA and the NFL were EA-instigated.

After that, there have been rumors that this end-result would happen, with them really flaring up just about a year ago, I believe.

Yeah, I don't believe that for a second, regardless of what the press releases say. EA has engaged in precisely this type of anti-competitive behavior for years.

While I agree that ESPN NBA games are usually superior, sales-wise, how do they compete? I'd have to think that Live still has a significant edge, for Sega and Take-two to continue their budget pricing with their NBA title...

The budget pricing paid off for them, in that they sold a record number of games this year. I heard that they sold more than LIVE but I'm not sure if that's true. I'm sure they are hoping that people will stick with the series next year, even if it's goes up in price a little.

the real question is why doesn't EA just make their own system and make madden, NHL, Fifa, and the lord of the rings games exclusive. Imagine what that would do to the casual gamer.

I'm sure they make a boatload of money making games for the other consoles, without having to worry about competing with them and taking a loss in hardware sales (not to mention they don't seem to have any history with hardware).

An interesting article from IGN about a forthcoming announcement from the NBA about exclusivity. It's not bad news like the articles title would lead you to believe.

interesting. Good to see that espn will contine to do basketball. Maybe they'll put even more effort into it now that football is gone and take on ea that way. ESPN Basketball was already pretty good. I used to like live, but it seems to me they haven't done much with basketball since ps1, though i hear that free style, three point and slam dunk contest was supposedly good in the latest edition.
