Christmas gift help ?

I've been out of the video game loop for about ten years, so I'm asking for you qualified opinion.

Which platform SNES, PS2, and etc is best for the support of games targeted at the age groups 5-10? (three children to share)

This is going to be a gift that I would like to limit at about $300. If it goes over by a little that is fine.

HELP ME PLEASE

Thanks all.

The Nintendo GameCube is generally seen as the most kid friendly of the major systems.

I own a GameCube and an X-box, but for that age group, I might consider a PS2, due to the wide range of games available.

My son is 6 and daughter is 4. My son plays on the Cube much of the time, except for a thing or 2 he plays with me on the X-box.

You could also go the GBA route for each of them and maybe a game as well for around the price you are talking...

I like how you used SNES as a platform.

I would say the Nintendo is generally aimed at kids, so the Gamecube would probably be the best bet. I think you can get one and the newest Mario Kart for $99.

Thanks everyone, it looks like the Game cube. I see a nice bundle (mariocart) at COSTCO.com and hope that the B &M has the same. The thing is cheaper than I anticipated, so I will probably get a third controller and 3-5 more games depending on price.

Thanks Again.

Without knowing more details, I'd suggest getting your kids a gamecube and three wavebirds!

I'd agree with the wavebirds. I have my GC fairly high up on the entertainment center and with the wavebirds I don't have to worry about them pulling the cube down, etc. Excellent idea.

Go to gamestop.com, get the gamecube bundle with:

platinum gamecube
free $29 game (or less)
one controller
free $15 voucher for another nintendo game or accessory (it's inside the box)
Mario Kart

for $99

For kids ages 5 to 10, gamecube is most definitely the way to go. I've had all the neighborhood kids stop by my house (ages 5 to 10), and they've never played anything but my gamecube (and I've got all three sitting there).

Hate to say it but GCN is probably the choice. I'd avoid the wavebirds though. Don't get me wrong, it is THE BEST controller on the market. The only reason I would avoid is the kids. It has an on/off switch. So if they leave it on... you will be replacing batteries left and right.

But now you can pick up a ton of the great games cheap.

Zelda
Mario Kart
Mario Golf
F-zero
Mario Sunshine
Pikmin
Luigi's Mansion (this was a blast, quite short for an experienced gamer though)
Super Smash Bros.
Waverace
Burnout 2
I'd even get them the Mega Man Collection (8 classic games on 1 disc)

Thanks again everyone.
I ended up with
Gamecube
4 wavebirds
memory card (the clerk said it was the best one out 1000 something blocks whatever that means)
Mario Kart (this was incl)
Zelda (these two were for $30 less the 15 coupon = $15)
Animal Crossing
A spare control (this was incl)
Total came to about $270 with tax, so I'll either get a three pack from COSTCO or another pair of the 2 for $30.

Thanks everyone!
