Sid Meier's Pirates!
The new version is awesome. Captures all the fun and replayablility/open endedness of previous versions and adds some new things.
And the limited edition costs the same as the regular but lets you use 1 dvd instead of multiple cds, plus it has the windows version of Pirates! Gold
and although it gets a little slugish, it's playable on a P3 500

yeah, sailing east is a bit harder than in earlier versions. I've lost ships I was escorting because they didn't get slowed down and by the time I caught up to them they were being sunk

I guess it is pretty repetitive, since there's just a few things you do over and over, but I just can't stop playing. I do get a bit tired of the dancing, so the unattractive daughters are out of luck now (first game I played I never said no, and it got really old once I reached a certain point).

Yep those "plain" daughters are S.O.L. I need to fing the dancing shoes though, I get killed when trying to woo the beautiful daughters. I did get lucky one time and a dance went flawlessly with a hot daughter.
It is a bit repetitve but I've found that increasing the difficulty level makes it much more fun. The sword fights are actually a challenge now and I get a huge share of the loot.
I'm runniong it 1600x1200 on a 2 GHZ laptop (64meg Ati 9000 and 512 meg RAM. I get some slowdown on the shipboard fights (maybe that's we they seem easy) when there's lots of guys and fires in the background. Otherwise it looks beautiful. The animations and characters are great. If only I hadn't bought World of Warcraft, I'd be playing Pirates! nonstop.
