XBox Live question

My son has an xbox and he wants xbox live for christmas. Could someone tell me what I need to do to to make this happen. I have high speed internet (cable) and a router. He has at the very least, two controllers. We just bought him Halo 2 and I think this would be a great Christmas gift. Any help would be appreciated.

Yep, just connect the XBOX to the router, and get an XBLive starter kit. Other than that, you're all set.

Make sure that you get a long enough Cat-5 Ethernet cable that reaches all the way from you xbox to your router.

Yep, you will need a credit card to sign up.....everything you need is done with the XBOX. As said, make sure you have a LONG enough cable to connect between the XBOX and the computer.

If you want to save yourself some money, there was a 2-month free code that came with Halo 2. I would go ahead and buy him a Xbox-Live Starter kit, so he can have the headset when he plays online. But I would just use the code from the 2-month trial first, and then use your purchased code after that.

Actually, I'd recommend NOT getting the headset. There's too much ignorance displayed by most of the people on live.

Yeah, that brings up a good point. I don't know how much you know about Live, but there are some foul-mouthed people on it, so just keep that in mind when your son is playing. I would still get him the headset, just so he can talk during team games. Nothing is more annoying than someone who won't talk during a team game. I normally just take mine off though if I get in with a group of people talking foolishly.

IMO, if you trust you kid on the internet, then he's probably heard/seen just about anything that XBOX LIVE could throw at him.

Make sure you go into the options and make it so he can't download pay contact. Go into the xbox setting and it will say like turn off premium contact. Don't want him downloading shit without asking first.

That stuff is always at least $5. He can download the free stuff but if he tried to download something that was pay it would not let him do it.

You can change the option at anytime in case you do want to pay for it later then turn it back on. I have it turned off on mine in cause I'm tried while playing or not paying much mind and click on buy contact.

This should have all you need to know about it.

Actually, just a 2-month FREE trial card would be fine. That's how I first connected to XBL -- and the extended ethernet cable, of course. You can then later attach a 12-month subscription code from the Starter Kit making it a total of 14-months.

I'm new to Xbox live as well. Is there any way to do this with a wireless connection?

Thanks.

Yes, Linksys and M$ are the only ones I know that make a game adapter, but all brand routers should work, either b or g.

A wireless router and a wireless game adapter.

-or-

A wireless router and a wireless NIC.

Here is more info.

If I were you, I would give him the Live starter kit wrapped up for Christmas, then you two can set it up together. When you set it up, you have to choose a Gamertag (nickname). I'm sure he'd prefer to do that himself.
