Final Fantasy I&II - Dawn of Souls
$24.88 at Target today!
To be honest, I didn't like the first Final Fantasy, and from what I've played II wasn't much better. But I'm going to pick this up anyway to get some old-school RPG time on my GBA. Since I did play and beat the first game a good dozen times (heh, maybe I did like it) I'm really interested in seeing the new stuff.

Just picked it up 20 mins ago. Still at work so I haven't played it yet.
I really enjoy the FF series but the progression has turned them into much more then just "RPG's". I like playing the later installments IX, X, X-2 but with all the mini-games and such you need alot of free time to get a 100% completion.
FF: Dawn of Souls is just perfect for filling that old school RPG niche that I'm looking for. I read that one of the changes they made is with the magic system. Instead of buying each instance of magic, you now have MP. Much easier.

I'll have to find my GBA headphones for this! If there was thing I liked about these games it was the music. The main theme of Final Fantasy II is one of my favorite musical pieces on the NES.. really, really good. *listens to the NSF now, while at work*

Has this been confirmed? If so it will be my reason to own a DS.

Yes, but bear in mind it is the original III for the 8-bit NES.

I know. It's the only one I've never played before. That's why I'm excited.

Any word of a complete NES/SNES/FAMICOM-era FF anthology for the Gamecube? That'd be sweet.

I've put in about two hours and so far it's a blast to play. Yes, they've redone the music (More of a rock-ish tone). They also added the run fuction, hold the B button or turn to "always on" in the config menu. I really like the addition of the bestiary. It list the full stats of the enemy, how many times you've killed them, and the total percentage amount of enemies you've faced.
This versions seems much easier with the addition of MP and the ability to save anywhere. But I find this perfect because I don't have the time to spend leveling up like I did when I was younger.
BTW - The B-select to bring up the map is still functional and it's much more detailed w/ markers to every location you've visited.

Man, I'm really torn on the music so far. I knew something was up when The Prelude had GUITAR in it. Some of the arrangements sound pretty good.. some don't. But the common factor is that they're all WAY TOO BUSY. Whoever arranged the music for this went nuts. I did like the boss music for when you fight Garland. HOWEVER, they totally mutilated the main theme of Final Fantasy II.. I'm aghast. It was one of my favorite FF songs.

I'm glad this version is much easier, much like the earlier Dragon Warrior/Quest ports to GBC (which are also great, btw, especially III). I used to think mindlessly leveling up was fun back in the day, but I must have been crazy, because old-school RPGs require SO much leveling up that it got pretty ridiculous.

However, I will point out some missed opportunities. First of all they should've added a new class or two. It would've also been nice to choose the gender of your characters if we're doing a "Create a Party" system. I'm not far, but there so far doesn't appear to be any new weapons or items. Maybe I'm just comparing this too much to the remake of Dragon Warrior III which added a new class (already had gender selection from the original version), added TONS of new weapons and items, a HUGE mini-game where you found rare items and a bonus dungeon (two if you're playing the GBC remake). But, I just got the ship and have much to do, so we'll see.

always hated that about the old game.
Did they make it a lil easier to earn GP to buy stuff? I finished FF1 on my pc a few weeks ago and it took forever to rack up a lot of gold to buy weapons/armor/spells.
