Recommend a good online game (cheap/free)

I think i would like to try some online games.. something like everquest or similar (don't really know any names).. can anyone recommend a good one that is free or cheap (just in case i don't like it , i don't want to be locked into a monthly fee)

The world of warcraft sounds like it would've been perfect, but i was in too late

I see Outpost/Fry's has the Sims 2 Online for $9.99.. Can I buy this and start playing online or is it more of an expansion pack type thing?

You could try the open beta for world of pirates at www.worldofpirates.de

It's not a great example of MMORPGs though, small player base, 2 person developer team and outdated graphics (about on par with Civ 2)

But it's online and it's free.

There is Guild Wars coming out soon. Not sure how much the game itself will be, but its a MMORPG and has no montly fee to play.

I played a beta of it and it seemed pretty cool.

You could try the new MMORG Saga of Ryzom. It has a 14 day free trial. Just download the client, and go! Don't forget to cancel if you don't like it, though, otherwise they'll charge you.

Adventure Quest is kind of fun as well. Not as good as Kingdom of Loathing but it is "prettier" in terms of graphics and animation.

I found the Battlefield 1942 Deluxe Edition (including expansion pack) for $7.50 at Target. That's a fun game and still going strong online.

BTW The online Sims game is called The Sims Online. The Sims 2 is $50 and not an online game.

Ahhhhh. The Sims Online, Vesion 2. Well, I don't know how it differs with the original, but The Sims Online was very poorly received, essentially a chat room and not much more. Check it out if you like, but don't be discouraged about online gaming if that one doesn't appeal to you, since it's not really a game.

guess i'll hit frys and just search through some of the titles.. going to try Saga of Ryzom, but not sure it is my style... i'm really surprised there isn't a current themed MMROPG.. almost like a Grand Theft Auto, where you could start online gangs and drug wars

One MMORPG set in modern times is City of Heroes. Not cheap or free, however.

Yup that be them - it adds to the ridiculousness of the game, which is very good.

Just thought of another choice: Neverwinter Nights. This game still has a very active online community, tons of varying gameplay due to the user-made modules out there, and there's no monthly fee.
