RE 4 coming to PS2
http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/10...s_6111911.html
Pretty big news, and a big blow to the gamecube, although the PS2 version will come almost a year later. I wonder if the same thing will happen with this as with viewtiful joe (sold pretty good on the cube, terrible on the ps2).
Anyone want to explain the exlusivity agreement. Is a game exlcusive unless they feel like making it for another system. It sounds like there was no exclusive deal in the first place.
Formerly GameCube-exclusive entry in Capcom's survival horror series will appear on PlayStation 2 in 2005.
Capcom announced today that the long-awaited follow-up to its popular survival horror franchise, originally planned to appear only on the GameCube console, is also headed to Sony's PlayStation2.
The PS2 version of Resident Evil 4 is currently slated to be released at the end of 2005 in Japan, the US, and Europe. The GameCube version is still scheduled for a January 2005 release in the US and Japan, followed by a spring release in Europe.
In a statement released today, Capcom said that the decision to make Resident Evil 4 go cross-platform was based on requests from fans worldwide, market considerations, and shareholder requests. The statement made mention of the fact that each version of the game will be developed to take advantage of the strengths of the respective platform.

Not a blow to the GameCube at all. The game is still coming out first on the Cube by almost a year and its optimized for the Cube's hardware. 99% of the people that will get this on the PS2 probably don't have a Cube anyway so its no loss for the Cube, but a bit more money to make down the line for Capcom.

Besides the GC is still the only console you can get every RE game made on.

And you can't get EVERY single RE game made for the GC. The original version/DC version as well as the survivor games, and don't forget Outbreak.

In regards to your second part, you can't get the original first game, not sure why you want to with such an awesome remake available. The DC version is available on the cube if I'm reading that that. And outbreak, well, is that considered a true RE game?

I always wondered why this wasn't the plan from the beginning. These RE games are somewhat popular here, but the "Biohazzard" games as they are called there are HUGE in Japan. I understood why Nintendo wanted to have the games as a GC exclusive, but I could never understand how that was more adventageous to Capcom; no matter what the details of that agreement were, they were losing a large portion of their die-hard fans who played the games on the PS1 and now owned PS2s. I'm sure they said goodbye to a lot of yen when they signed that deal.

My guess is that Capcom's exclusivity agreement with Nintendo was probably contigent upon certain sales numbers, perhaps based on how well the other RE games sold, or on just overall installed user base.
But yeah, Capcom needs to do this. Even if it's a huge hit on GC, it still won't make the money it could on other systems, so moving to the PS2 later on is a good move. It is funny how some message boards are up in arms about this, even starting a petition. It's just silly though, they still have a year of exclusivitiy, which is forever in the video game world.

The blow to Nintendo is NOT the fact that RE4 is also coming to the PS2, but the fact that this announcement is made BEFORE the released of the GC version. Unlike VJ, which was announced for the PS2 well after the GC version was released.
This may hurt sales as the exclusivity of RE4 to the GC could have expanded its user base.
But the GC version will surely be superior to the PS2 version as the game was optimized for the GC

I got my hands on the new Nintendo demo disc w/ playable Resident Evil 4, Metroid Prime 2, Viewtiful Joe 2, Mario Party 6 and Mario Power Tennis. I really wanted to see how RE 4 would look in progressive scan on a nice widescreen HDTV but it won't work. It plays on my smaller TV and I hope there isn't a problem with the final build. It does say "Trial Edition" so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'm blown away at the playing experience though. I've seen countless videos of the demo being played by someone else/teasers/trailers but Jebus almighty it's freaky in person. 3 critters coming at you, one with a pitchfork, one with an axe and the other frothing mad and then WAMMO, another one grabs you from your blindspot. A quick tap of th A button and your elbow takes off it's head. Sooooo goooood (for a demo).
