Best System for a 4yr old girl?

I'm planning on getting my four year old niece a game system for Christmas, and was wondering which one most of you thought would be best for her as far as the controller, and the game selection for a four year old? I have an XBOX, but I don't see that many games for her age group. Also, what are some games that would be good for her.

Wow, you're a great uncle.

I'd say Gamecube since a lot of the GC games are relatively cartoony but I can't imagine a 4 yr old understanding or wanting to play anything other than Double Dash, Mario Gold or Luigi's Mansion.

Gameboy Advance, no contest.

Disney Princess seems like a perfect game for a gal that young, my girlfriend has (had?) it, it looked very simple. I really can't think of much else for a 4 year old.. but there are plenty of easy to play stuff for her once she gets the hang of it.

There's actually a console for small kids. I can't remember the name, I saw it at Toys R Us (in the same section as the LeapPads). It's easier for them to play, and a lot cheaper than the big consoles too. I'm considering it as a birthday gift for my 3-year-old.

Hey now! Xbox has a Barbie title, a Spongebob title and the Crash series. Sonic as well I think.

But I would go with the GBA suggestion as well. Either that or an original NES or SNES. Games are cheap and since this was before the GTA era, all the violence in any of them is quite cartoony and or over the top.

Or get an N64. There were some games targeted for younger children on it. And it's like $24.99 used at Gamespot.

Also check eBay and see if anyone is selling a bundle of games & a system for kids.

Just don't get the Finding Nemo Video game. I originally got it for her, but it was to hard for her. I had the hardest time beating that game for my daughter. (she was 5 at the time)

Gamecube... Animal Crossing will keep her occupied for weeks. Hell, it is taking up most of my wife's freetime!

Even the gamecube is probably too advanced for a 4 year old. To be honest, an original nintendo and the mario bros. games might be the best option (and duck hunt).

If it has to be a choice between XBOX, GC and PS2 I would go with the GC. But even then there just aren't too many games for a 4 year old. For example someone recommended "Animal Crossing" which is a great game and has kept my 9 and 11 year old busy for weeks. But unless your 4 year old niece is a good reader that game and many others are not going to be to good for her.

When my kids were that age I got them a low-end PC to use because there is a ton of educational/games for young kids on the PC that you won't find on a console.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm gonna let her play with my old SNES and see how she does. I looked at the store today and the GC seems to have a lot of Disney games, and she's a disney freak so that would be good. I bought her some pooh software for my sister's computer and she's done quite well at them. Since the gamecube is cheaper, I can afford a Vsmile as well. I'll let Grandma and Grandpa worry about the games for em hehe. Thanks again for all the suggestions, this community truly shines !!!!

If she's a Disney freak - get her a Disney PC. They just came out and they are all custom and shit.

Gamecube for sure, the young kids love it. Donkey Konga is a blast for all ages.

PS2 because of the PS1 titles combined with the PS2 titles gives you a huge library of kids games if you are going with a current generation system. A PS1 would also be a good choice, followed by the GC and last would be an XBox.

I would not get a portable for a 4 year.

N64, and I speak from personal experience.

My 4 year old is obsessed with his N64. He plays Mario (can get stars by himself and everything), Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, and Star Wars Pod Racer. There are also several Disney titles available, but he's not too into Disney. He's tried playing our Gamecube and Xbox, but the controllers are too big for his little hands, and the games are way too complex. There's too many different combinations of buttons to push, even on Mario, for him to play comfortably. Another major concern with the newer consoles is that all the games are on CD, not cartridges. No matter how good your 4 year old is, they're very accident prone, and having a hardy cartrige is MUCH better than having a fragile CD.

N64 all the way. Your niece (and her parents) will thank you for it.

Oh, and the V-Play is crap. The games are too simplistic even for my 2 year old. We tried it out, and both my boys tried it for a couple seconds are were bored immediately.
