Hey I have cable now 3 meg down and 250 up. I just got DSL to try it out 1.5 down and 356 up. So anyone with DSL do you ever run into any issues using it on xbox live?

I haven't done Live in about a year, but when I did (on DSL) I had zero problems with it whatsoever, well except for the inordinate amount of sub-intelligent retards, but that wasn't my DSL's fault (or was it?!).

Thats not because of Live it is because of the headset. Always on when I play friends, always off when I play strangers.

DSL works just fine for xbox live.

I dont know. I have DSL average 512 up and down. And SW Battlefront sucks. Skips around and tons of lag. Maybe it's just my connection?

I find that the DSL that I have now doesn't have as high of top speeds as my old cable modem, but has much more consistent speeds. In my own personal opinion, that makes it preferable for online gaming.

Topdawg, your connection should be more than suitable.

The skipping and lag is generally due to the inadequacy of the host's connection, not your own. SWBF has a hefty upload requirement--40kbps per player. A host must have 40kbps upload for every player in his/her game. With many cable/DSL connections cabbled at 128 or 256kbps on the upload side, this equates to 3 or 6 players. Unfortunately, many of the people hosting on XBL do not heed these requirements, lie about their connection speed in Options, and host much larger games than that. This results in lag and skipping for everyone.

You should try hosting. With your relatively fast 512kbps upload speed, you should be able to host 10-13 players.

Well Verizon has 3 Megs down and 756 up for $42. I'm going to get that after my free month is up. It's the same price as comcast with the same download but with a great fucking upload speed. I should be able to host any game on live with that.

PS. That Star Wars game is just crap online. I was playing on one sever no lag then boom nothing but lag. That game has some shit programing. Thank god I rented it.

The online lag with this game has been an issue turning up in most of the reviews I've read of it so far...and unless you play it on Live its basically unplayable (Single player is worthless supposedly). As a side note, DSL may be slower but it certainly IS more consistant than Cable I've noticed and as someone mentioned above.

I think it depends on your DSL provider. I never had any problems when I had Bell South. Now I have Alltel and the performance isn't the same and I have to reset my modem every couple of days or so.

I'm thinking of paying $23 more per month to get Comcast (non cable subscriber price). I get around 1 meg down and 100k up with my DSL.

Also the speed of cable and DSL is the same. I can get 3 meg down and 756 up if I want. So same download as comcast just far better upload.

Also some places verizon is testing 16 meg down 5 meg up for $50 a month. Lets see comcast beat that. Course some folks will still say cable is better. It would seem you have cable fan boys. I mean damn who knew?

2-line DSL is only capable of a maximum of 6.144 Mbps downstream. See http://www.csgnetwork.com/bandwidth.html . The new Verizon offering you mention (it is called Fios BTW) isn't DSL-based at all. It uses fiber-optic cable to the home whereas DSL uses regular telephone lines. See http://www.verizon.net/fios/ .

In any case, cable is capable of much, much higher speeds than DSL (and even current Fios)--up to 200Mbps with the upcoming DOCSIS 3.0 standard. See http://www.cedmagazine.com/ced/2004/0704/07d.htm .

In practice, however, this doesn't matter right now as few providers--cable or DSL--offer speeds in excess of 6mbps. However, DSL just can't compete with those rare cable companies that do, such as Optimum Online. For those of us not so lucky to have that option, the cable versus DSL choice largely comes down to availability and best speed for the buck right now.

OH I got owned. You know allot about this stuff. Yeah I got DSL for the high upload. Comcast does not want to gave you much upload no idea why. I can get 3 meg down and 756 up with verizon if I want that is all I will ever need. I may just keep what I have now.

Holy shit I just looked at that Optimum Online god damn that is fast. All I can pick around here is comcast their prices suck much ass. I guess that is what happens when they don't have to fight to keep anyone. I sure wish a new cable company would move in already.

I use SBC YAHOO for my DSL, and it works GREAT, I'm VERY pleased!!!!

I'm very happy with what I have now. I hosted 10 players on Rainbow 6 demo and it worked fine. With comcast people could not even join my game. So maybe in a month or two I will up to the faster speed.

There is now a patch for correct this issue.
