Are you too "manly man" to use game TUTORIALS?

I'm not. I think most help the average gamer like me a great deal.

Inspired by this thread. But I'm in no way singling out the person who posted. I had been meaning to post about this for some time now and that thread got me to finally do it.

As I said in that thread, I had tried to play R63:BA with a friend and she had a hard time controlling her character. But the next time we went through the tutorial and she had a slightly better grasp of controlling the players in that game. I think I'll try to have her go through Tutorials in the future because it's damn sure easier than trying to explain the controls while playing.

Especially if nutcase enemies are screaming and shooting at you

I'm not sure how to vote. Does the thumbs-up mean I use tutorials, or that I don't use tutorials.

Anyway, I always play the tutorials and/or read the manual. Saves you a lot of grief down the line. "Wait...I can throw GRENADES in this game?!?" Plus, they're often fun and creative.

It seems that a lot of games now make the first level a "tutorial" level... forcing you to learn the game controls before you can even get through the first stage - ramming it down your throat - almost as bad as educational television.

But I'll always play the tutorial first. It's a lot better than trying to memorize a single controller buttons/actions diagram that flashes up on screen as it's loading...

However; I was playing the GC version of XIII the other day, and was stuck in the vault for about 10-15 minutes trying to figure out how to make that mofo crouch to get through a vent... JEEEZUZ... (stupid teeny tiny Z button).

But what does it matter? I still can't vote due to the confusing nature of the candidate layout...

i use tutorials b/c i hate reading manuals... i'd rather play thru the tutorial than read the manual (other than maybe a button layout diagram)

All the damn time. I read the entire guide before playing the game sometimes so I don't miss anything.

I usually read the instruction manual while on the crapper, and then go through the tutorial so that I can get a good feel for the game.

I'm not good enough at video games to skip the tutorial, I need all the help I can get.

Sorry guys, but Strategy Guide are for *******! Go in it blindly and if you are a "true gamer" you will learn fast.

I prefer the tutorials in games to the instruction manuals. I find it a quick way to pick up the details of playing a game and saves me a ton of time later on.

I like gamefaq strategy guides as well. With certain games there is just no way to find out everything without a strategy guide or lots and lots of free time. I put in 75 hours on Tales of Symphonia, but without occasionaly looking at a strategy guide I would have had to spend twice that to find everything not to mention somethings
Spoiler:
like the steps to getting Kratos to join you instead of Zelos
are nearly impossible to figure out on your own.

I use them when I get stuck all the time. I play games to have fun, not run around in circles on the same dungeon for 10 hours.

Yes. There have been too many cases in the past where I didn't discover advanced play controls until, like, the middle of the game. A quick 3-minute glance at the control section helps avoid that.

I hate mandatory tutorials. If I'm in the mood, I'll go through them. Otherwise I'll just look at the moves list in the manual.

I'd rather start playing and get hints or tips in the first few levels than sit through "This is how you move forward...this is how you move backward...now you try it!" crap.

ha, I agree. I never read them. Most games give you a level or two to get used to controls and all that other bullshit before throwing the hard shit on you anyways.

I use them. Playing through a good tutorial level is way better than reading the book.

It depends on the game. I almost always read the instruction manual before playing a game. It's like a ritualistic thing I guess. I think it started back in the day when I had to save for so long just to buy one game and took the ticket from the pouch. Paid the people, picked my game up from the window, and during the car ride home I would read through the instruction manual. Of course back then the instructions were a wee bit simpler.
