RIP Sierra On-Line
Well, as of today about 1 PM, PDT the bellevue office of Sierra Entertainment closed its doors forever. Operations shut down and everything was moved down to Cali and the Vervendi/Universal offices.
The long legacy of awsome games - Leisure Suit Larry, Space Quest, Gabriel Knight - pfft! All gone now in a puff of copyright and liscening ownership. I'm sure the Leisure Suit Larry franchise will roll on, but not under the Sierra banner. And thus, a moment of silence for a once great video game company brought low by stupid upper managment decisions and morons in suits who have no clue what the F they are doing. (And no, I'm not bitter about losing my job. Why do you ask). |
:(
Those were some great games back in the day. I always enjoyed playing King's Quest and Space Quest. Leisure Suit Larry was a blast too. |
:(
Oh well, I still have my Space Quest and Leisure Suit Larry collections. Never did make it through all of them. LucasArts was the only one that was in the same league as Sierra for adventure games. |
:(
The first PC games I played (Hero's Quest/Quest for Glory, Leisure Suit Larry, Space Quest, etc.) were all Sierra Games. I used to really want to work there when they were in Oakhurst (making games a few miles from Yosemite? How cool would that be?!) I guess I'm glad it didn't happen, since I'd be out of work! |
:(
I share the same sentiments.... some of the first PC games i ever played here as well... all the Quest games were absolutely classics, and its a shame that they're closed down amidst all the takeovers and buyouts. |
I still have a ton of Sierra CD-Roms. I loved their games in the mid 90's.
|
Very sad indeed. I used to love their games.

Loved Space Quest! Just so much fun! Damn shame
|
Kings Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest and Larry are some of the greatest franchises of all tme. Although they all lost their challenge when they switched to a point and click system vs. text control. Loved 'em all anyway.
Sierra has been missed and now, will always been missed. Thanks for the great times. |
El Kabong - What did you do for Sierra? I'm curious.
I'm saddened by this news as well... |
Originally posted by Fodder1976 El Kabong - What did you do for Sierra? I'm curious. Pretty sweet job - long, long hours some times, but the pay was good. And hey - I got to play video games for a living. How bad can that be? (Actually, it can get pretty bad :) ) |
Had so many ground breaking titles, Kings Quest 3 and Leisure Suit larry were my favs
RIP |
One of my favorite games of all-time is King's Quest V, although I own and have played the first six as well. Quest for Glory, Gabriel Knight, Space Quest... not to mention Half-Life, Homeworld, and Tribes. They even published the first two Ultimas, didn't they? I liked LucasArts better (I liked the "we won't kill you unexpectedly" philosophy and the whacked-out humor), but Sierra was definitely up there.
Sierra had their share of crap, though. Outpost. Phantasmagoria. I tried playing Mask of Eternity (VIII), but soon decided it was one of the worst games I've ever played. |
Awesome...a Sierra On-Line thread.
Hey...are there any of the old "Quest" games that are compatible with Windows XP? Particularly Quest for Glory and King's Quest. |
That blows.

I loved the original Police Quest. Before I ever had a computer, like back in 1994, my friend had the Mac version. A couple of years later I got a Webtv (still no PC), and I bought the PC version of PQ that came with SWAT 1. I actually just beat it like a year ago, I had to find a strategy guide to figure everything out. I kept wandering around aimlessly.
I never could get anywhere in SWAT. I'd go to the target range and couldn't even figure out what I was supposed to do there. I loved the little things in PQ. "Detective, what is it you're trying to say?" "Your action is unwarranted!!" JP |
I loved the old Kings Quest games. I think I still have Quest for Glory 4 around somewhere on a cd. My favourite Siera game was Robin Hood. It was like the King's quest games, actually, Robin kind of looked like the king's quest character with a few colour changes. lol.

The old-school "Quest" games are the reason that I can type so fast. Who says playing video games doesn't pay off? RIP, Sierra.

I will never forget the first time I died in Liesure Suit Larry 1. Walked out of the bar and died from an STD. I never took the damn condom off! rotfl |
I loved the old Sierra games like Hero's Quest/Quest for Glory, Police Quest, King's Quest, and Space Quest...I still have the original box, disks, and manuals of Quest for Glory 1 when it was called Hero's Quest. I thought that was the coolest game ever!

Originally posted by BeckysBoy Funny you should mention LucasArts, because they're about an inch away from oblivion as well. They just laid off another 30 people and have cancelled all but one game in development. Even if they manage to survive, they've all but stated that they'll never do an adventure game again. Really, really sad. It's too bad. It was possible before for them to produce spectacular in-house Star Wars games: X-Wing or TIE Fighter, for example. |
