Originally posted by Nighthawk I loved the old Kings Quest games. I think I still have Quest for Glory 4 around somewhere on a cd. My favourite Siera game was Robin Hood. It was like the King's quest games, actually, Robin kind of looked like the king's quest character with a few colour changes. lol. I've played just about all the old school Quest games, and still own all 5 Quest for Glory games. I love the lesser known games too... Laura Bow: The Dagger of Amon Ra was great, as was Freddy Pharkas :) |
In my mind, Sierra ended when they left Coarsegold, California. ;)
Anyway, I sure played my share of their games. They were the kings of Adventure games for a long time. Conquest of the Longbow was also my favorite Sierra Adventure. |
Didn't Sierra also make Willy Beamish? That game was dope.

I'm noticing that everyone loves the Sierra games from 10+ years ago. It sure can't be good for a software company when the most popular games were made years ago.
I think I'll dig up King's Quest III for old time's sake. |
Sierra was left in the dust when everyone went 3d. Although thats ironic, since they actually sold their own 3d card back in the day, the Screamin' 3D based on Rendition's V1000 chip as a competitor to the Voodoo 1.

Didn't Sierra produce Half-Life and the upcoming Half-Life 2?

I remember when Sierra distrubuted their games in plastic bags. RIP...but you know what, it's good that the company dies because it wasn't even a shell of it's former self. Over the last 5 years it went straight to hell with only HomeWorld and Halflife as good examples(neither really made by Sierra).
They should have been ruling the adventure market with new Kings Quest, Space Quest and Gabriel Knight games..... but no. D |

Originally posted by BeckysBoy Silly Derrich. Don't you know that adventure games aren't what the market wants? And believe us, we're in a position to know what the market wants! We're Sierra and LucasArts. Trust us! We've got our finger on the pulse of gaming. We know what the next big... ...Oops. We're bankrupt. Once they saw Myst take off, they felt like they were behind the times. So they started sinking a lot of money into FMV games (Full Motion Video). The problem was, with terrible storage and compression of these games, a decent game took up 3 or 4 discs for very small video that looked bad. They would have pulled out of the FMV trend if Phantasmagoria didn't do so well. But it did, and they stayed the course. By the time 1996 rolled around, Quake ushered in the truly 3D FPS genre and things were really taking off. There was nowhere to go but up. I think Sierra tried putting a lot of money into 3D adventure genre, but the hardware wasn't there yet and in the meantime no one was playing adventure games because they had become terrible parodies of their former selves. Kings Quest VIII was ok, but so slow and not worth the time. Lucasarts brought out The Dig, Full Throttle and Sam & Max. And Sierra one last Space Quest, Leisure Suit Larry and Police Quest. But, the market pretty much caved in. Terrible product in the form of FMV and quasi-3D games had destroyed the empire that these companies built. |
|
Did Sierra really make that many FMV games? I only recall Phantasmagoria 1 and 2, as well as Gabriel Knight 2.
Edit: And i suppose the first SWAT game was largely FMV. |

Damn, I miss the point and click adventure games from Sierra and others. Gabriel Knight, Monkey Island and my all time favorite Grim Fandango.
Never cared that much about all the FMV, but I did enjoy the hell out of the Tex Murphy FMV adventure games. Access is gone though bought up by Microsoft and all that remains is the Links series. . |

The Curse of Monkey Island is possibly my favorite game of all time, perhaps tied with Monkey Island 2. |

I tried both of the King's Quests a few months ago.... good stuff. Looking forward to Quest for Glory since that was my favorite "Quest" series of games.
