Fable preview up on IGN

There's a very long 12 page preview of Fable up on IGN today:

http://xbox.ign.com/articles/537/537930p1.html

Sounds very very good. Its almost more of a review than a preview. I was afraid it would suck based on all the old hype, but it sounds like it might actually live up to the hype. Very much looking forward to it.

Looks to be a great game. I hope it'll be worth the long wait(and from the sound of the preview, it will be).

Preordered this ages ago (for four crappy old titles -- thanks EB!). Glad to see that it's almost here and sounds to be as good as advertised. The DVD preview looked pretty cool as well. Danny Elfman's music =

hm... the preview doesn't really say anything much about the story except that you're to seek revenge for the murder of your parents. to me, that's more important than the idiotically evil things that you can do in the game. so what if you can be a serial killer or kick around the heads you chop off? or fart? i mean, after the couple of times you do that, don't you get bored?

is this a solo rpg? or do you have a party?

overall, it seems to have the mechanics that could make a great rpg. hope that it is.

I don't have time to read it all now but what I did get to sounded great. I didn't preorder this game until recently because I didn't really think they would accomplish everything they set out to do with this game.

And except for the sidekick feature I was wrong.

I'm very impressed and can't wait for this one.

I'll probably end up passing on this. I was intrigued for a while, but the more I read it just doesn't sound like my cup of tea.

The open ended style of game play has never appealed to me, I got sick of running around doing random crap in GTA3 very quickly.

Plus with RPGs I prefer the Japanese, linear story driven design to the more open ended american games.

Well its only open-ended if you want it to be. There is always a high degree of freedom, but there is still a main quest you can follow if thats all you want to concentrate on. Same with GTA3, you don't have to run around and do random crap, so just stick to the storyline if thats all you are interested in.

Solo.

I agree with your criticism that the review focused too much on ways you can "cause trouble" in the game.

As a long time player of RPGs (beginning with tabletop), it annoys me to no end when people think that the way to role-play an evil character is to kill everybody in sight and cause random chaos. It's lame, it's boring, and it doesn't make much sense. In the real world, the most evil people in history have always kept a facade of legitimacy.

An RPG being compared to GTA does nothing good for me, but I've followed Fable long enough to look past that previewer's comparisons.

I read some more of the preview (not all) and some of them features definately sound interesting. I will still be picking this one up right away.

I just really hope it has a strong story, rich world, and plenty of meaningful, but not necessary, things to do. I also hope it is not too action or combat orientated.

True, but the skepticism I have hear is that the developers said in an interview a while back that the main quest would only be around 20 hours if you didn't mess with the open ended stuff much. And in my experience developers tend to overstate length in pre-release interviews.

Isn't a Fable supposed to have talking animals? I have yet to see anything other than a human.

I can't say anything about animals, but the preview on IGN does mention that some doors talk, and they will not let you through unless you've reached a certain level, or if you're evil it will also not let you through.

I've been looking forward to Fable forever and it looks like the wait it going to be worth it. It's terrific that Western developers are taking the initiative when Japanese companies won't.

I could've sworn this was gonna turn into vapor-ware.

It's still a month off, though - so we'll see.

Looks amazingly good if you ask me. I dislike all the borings rpgs out there where you have to follow the story and if you dont you can do anything. The last RPG I liked was KoTOR and this ressembles it except much more open.

Like KoTOR, it also has replay value as you need to try good and evil at least once!

the replay value on this game sounds immeasurable. I love replaying most RPGs (3 times thought KOTOR and counting) and this game sounds like there simply are no limits to what you can do. While I think plot may suffer a bit and not live up to FFVII or KOTOR, the gameplay in this sounds like it's going to revolutionize the RPG, and I think that's defintely where the emphasis is being placed.

i'm sposed to be getting the game next week! my roommate is directing the commercial for it. from the gameplay footage that i've seen it honestly looks a bit lame, but i'm holding out hope.

The emergent gameplay attempted in Fable is years ahead of anything Square/Enix has done.
