How Much Gaming a week is Too Much Gaming ?

Be honest

for a normal person with normal responsibilities, how much gaming a week do you think becomes too much gaming ?

Its only "too much" if gaming starts to remove you from your normal responsibilities. Playing videogames is a leisure activity and should only be done during leisure time. If playing begins to distract or remove you from normal activities and responsibilities, then it is too much.

Anything more than 12 hours a day is pushing it.

Poster # 2 pretty much sums it up.
Though I could game a whole lot more than I currently do.
My main problem is that when I realize I have a block of time ahead of me, I can't decide b/w
- watching TV
- watching TV show DVD
- watching movie DVD
- playing video game

IF I decide to play a video game, then it's on to WHICH game!!!
It's daunting I tell ya!

I play about 6-10 hours/week max, with room to increase to 15-20.

My sentiments exactly.

It varies from person to person given how much stuff they have to do in the real world with school, work, household chores, kids to take care of, spouse to keep happy etc.

I'm a single grad student and work 30 hours a week. So I stay pretty busy. I have a pretty active social calendar and some hobbies that I put ahead of gaming now (working out, running, movies, music etc.) So I rarely game more than 5 hours a week and often not even that much.

12 hours a day???

Maybe for a student. A normal person would have work for 8 hours, and a 1 hour commute/getting ready for work, and 6-8 hours of sleep. That's 15 to 17 hours taken up already.

I'm lucky if I can get 1 - 2 hours on a weekday...

I think students can afford to spend at least 12 hours a day gaming.

"Normal" people on the other hand ( ), like myself, *cough* can usually fit in about 7-10 minutes on a weekend evening between eating dinner, putting the kids to bed and falling asleep on the couch.

I work a 40 hr job, commute 1 hr to work, 1 hr back home after work. I'm also single with no dependents and currently without a significant other. If I do nothing else in the evening, and I just eat instant foods for dinner... I can get in a max of about 5-6 hrs of gaming per weekday night.

Oh, ok... didn't realize it was a joke, as I'm sure there are lots of students playing that much in the summertime. I know I did...

I also work a 40 hr a week job, on call the rest of the time, and have a 1 hour each way commute in rush hour Los Angeles traffic. I'm married with no kids, but a sister in law living with us. Besides eating and spending time with the family, there's also time when the main tv is taken (the TIVO makes us watch more television then ever before). I've moved my Xbox to the bedroom, mainly to practice ESPN, but I haven't been able to marathon RPGs like I used to, and as a result I have 20 or so unfinished RPGs in my queue. The hour or two I can spend is usually after everyone goes to sleep, and it's taken from my sleep time...

In addition, I'm sure most visitors to this board have at least a mild DVD addiction, which further takes up a lot of time. You wouldn't believe my DVD queue of unopened DVDs that have yet to be watched, and my wife questions me every time I buy yet another one...

I had really bad dreams of Skies of Arcadia back in the day. That's probably a bad sign.

When I was single, up until 2 weeks ago, I could play 4 or more hours after work in weekdays.

Now that I'm not single any more 1 hour is the maximum I can play after work in weekdays.

So yeah, it varies from person to person.

I remember staying up for two days straight with a friend during summertime to finish Phantasy Star II on the Genesis. Or in college, I remember that there was some stupid rumor that after playing hundreds of matches in MKII, you'd get to play Pong. I think we reached 200, and instead of stopping, we went for 300 instead, and so on. It was a kind of round-robin session with people stepping out to go to class and such, but it lasted for a long, long time.

Also in college, after finishing a particularly difficult CS project, we would play Diablo or Warcraft all night...

And I have been dreaming about plays in ESPN 2K5... argh! And I still suck at the game!

I don't think there can be a time limit on what is "too" much. Wait let me re-think that, people that die playing games because they don't eat, or have their g/f's or wife's, or b/f's or husbands leave them it's just too much. But maybe that's just too much for me, or anyone else, but for that person it isn't. The are doing something they like doing, and I say let em'. So I say play as many hours as you have time for.

For me - sometimes 1 hour in an entire week is too much. But it depends on the person and their commitments - I'd say, an average of 2 hours a day should be the absolute maximum - unless you don't have a job or a life...

Different strokes for different folks.

Back in the day I used to play a ton. Now most of the time I'd rather hit the gym, go for a run, go out and do something with friends, watch a movie, read a book etc. than play a game in my already limited spare time.
