Dragon Quest VIII (Dragon Warrior VIII)

Check out these screen shots!! HUUUGE step in the right direction from VII. Hopefully they'll eliminate the bulky class system that hampered my enjoyment of VII (..and VI to a lesser extent). I simply cannot believe Square-Enix has said NOTHING about this game coming out here. We've been denied the last 2 Dragon Quest games (4 if you count the side games). I felt it was a big mistake to leave Dragon Quest V as Japan only again.

That looks amazing. Pixy, you're right, major step in the right direction. I have a feeling that there'll be some sort of campaign to get it over here once these shots start circulating.

Considering the last game that came here only sold 4 copies in the US, enix's US support of Dragon Warrior is looking pretty dismal, we've already missed out on a number of DQ games already. It just hasn't been as popular here as Final Fantasy and usually gets stomped by it.

I have a feeling that now Square merged with Enix, things are looking up for a localization . It doesn't hurt that the game looks great either.

Yeah, what's funny is that Dragon Quest VII is the best selling PS1 game of all time in Japan (over 4 million copies I think). I like the game, but it's easily my least favorite of the seven. I'm probably going to import DQV Remix, I loved that game. I'm anxious to see what was added to it. The new Chapter 6 in Dragon Quest IV was really cool, and totally changed the ending of the game (considering that after you beat Necrosaro, he reverts back to Saro and joins you).

But back to VIII, I love cel-shaded games; I love the amount of details and animation that goes into the characters, it's amazing. I was really happy to see them go this direction with Dragon Quest since it's my favorite RPG series. I can't wait to see some stuff in motion, it's going to look like a full out Toriyama cartoon!

Actually, I remember from the Enix messageboard (before it was shut down by SquareEnix) - Dragon Warrior VII sold pretty well here in the states. They were happy with the sales. Not like it is in Japan, but they didn't expect that either.

I enjoyed VII quite a bit (although I still haven't beat it - the end guy kept kicking my ass). Looking forward to VIII. Looks like the style is coming together well. Sweet pictures.

I hope we eventually get some version of the DWIV remix, despite what Squenix has said about it. Still my favorite NES game ever.

I was never a fan of it to begin with, but if the gameplay is good I get past it (see Wind Waker, Sly Cooper).

When it's done right, I'm a big fan of the "toon look". And here, it's obviously done right.

Nice post Pixy, thanks.

Yeah I can handle it if the game calls for it or it still has detail in the game. Most of the time however when a game has that toon look they don't have much detail like a forking nose or nothing. Them modals look to have some nice detail to them. JSR modals had no detail in them.

Look at the pig he is fighting that thing looks flat and has no detail however that is fine being as it's a random beast. The mean people look great they has mouth a nose and allot of detail in them.

So this game is done right and looks great.

DQVII is a Greatest Hits title, isn't it? Still, it did fairly well in the US considering it's a non-Final Fantasy RPG.

I'm a big fan of old-school RPGs. But DQVII was needlessly painful and punishing on the player. I hope DQVIII is more playable.

I stopped playing DQVII the minute I missed a shard and had to go back to look for it. The game was linear like most old school rpgs, but it had a huge timesink with the constant back and forth travel you had to do.

Word out of TGS is that DQVIII is bound to be the single biggest PS2 game ever in Japan.

Just to let you all know, Dragon Quest VIII comes out November 27 (I'm pretty sure) in Japan. I'm teaching English in Japan for a year or so and all my students can not wait for this game to come out. I can't wait to see how many of them are "sick" the day it comes out....

Oh, and they have some video demonstrations of the game at some of the local supermarkets and videogame stores and it looks amazing. Beautiful and a lot of fun. If only my Japanese was better, I'd buy it in a second.

It'll match my previously purchased big Dragon Warrior plush slime, slime coin bank, and the DQ V mini figure I got this weekend at an anime convention in Chicago.

Trailer has been released!!

Here's a 125MB version, not sure if this will be up for long:

Here's a torrent for the smaller (20MB) version:

All I can say is: HOLY SHIT.
