Problems connecting PC to XBOX

I have a cat5 crossover cable connected from my PC to my modded XBOX. I can't get it to communicate using FTPFXP. It just keeps timing out. I tried to ping it and it times out also. Someone told me I need a router for it to work, while others say the direct connection works. Anyone else have this problem? Any solutions?

I would think that it would need a router, as it wouldn't be getting an IP address to FTP to with a direct connection, would it?

You can pick up a wired router for

You don't need a router-you can use a crossover cable.

What is FTPFXP? I've never heard of it. Is it FlashFXP?

Yes It's FlashFXP just a typo! I see there are different opinions on the router. I have tried to ping the computer's IP and get a response. When I try to ping the XBOX it just times out every time using just a crossover cable and static IP.

What are you running on the Xbox when you try to connect? You have to run something with an FTP client, such as Avalaunch or Evolution X. You have to configure that application with an IP address, and enter that same address in FlashFXP when you create the entry for the site in Site Manager. Also, both the username and password have to be "xbox" (no quotes, and lowercase letters only).

Running Evolutionx. Have entered the IP address of the Xbox on FlashFXP. Used the Quick Connect entering all of the needed information. Also entered username and password as xbox.

I have used the exact setup you described and it works fine. A few notes:
1) from cmd run ipconfig and figure out what your pc assigns your NIC IP when it is connected with the crossover cable. Then increment the last number by one and assign your xbox that IP. ex -> 192.168.100.2 on your PC means 192.168.100.3 on your xbox.
2) After making network setting changes to the xbox save and restart the box with the x-over cable still plugged in to let it reconfigure itself.
3) before running flashFXP, run ipconfig again on the pc to be sure it has the correct configuration.

I tried mixalot007's suggestions without any luck. I bought a router and I'm going to see if it makes a difference tonight after work.

Turning on "internet connection sharing" solved all my connectivity issues between XBOX and PC (cross-over cable into the ethernet port style connection.

I still can't get it to communicate. I even bought a router last night and hooked it up with no luck. It's going back. When I ping my PC it responds, but when I ping the XBOX it just times out. I tried to turn on "internet connection sharing" with no luck.

Did you try a different network cable with the router? The crossover cable won't work unless you're connecting them directly.

You do not want to use Crossover cables.

You want to use normal Ethernet cables ... somebody around here has posted pin out diagrams in the past.

Basically you use a crossover cable for a direct connection between PCs or Xboxes but use normal Ethernet cables for connections through routers/switches, etc

The standard, generally blue, CAT5 network cable should be used when using the router. Be sure your current cable (non router) actually is a crossover cable, when looking at both ends of the cable the wire should have a different pin configuration for the two ends. It also should be labeled as crossover or xover. A crossover cable is required for a direct connection.

Here is some help

I have two brand new cables. They are both cat5 crossover cables. They do have different configurations on each end.

On my XBOX when I hook up the crossover cable it says static connection. When I ping it though it just times out. Could it be the set up on my computer? When I ping my computer it responds.

Do you have ZoneAlarm or any type of firewall on your computer? I had ICS enabled on my computer and I couldn't connect. Only when I shut down Zonealarm did I see the Xbox and all the partitions in five seconds!

Also, I use normal ethernet cables to connect through my router...not crossover, but my house is wired fully with cat5e cable.

Hope this helps!

If your router supports auto MDI-X (many newer models do), then using two crossover cables (PC<->router and Xbox<->router) will work. Otherwise, it won't, and you'll need 2 straight-through cables.

You must make sure that the LAN IP of your PC and the LAN IP of your Xbox are in the same subnet--i.e. if the PC is 192.168.1.X (where X is 1 - 254) the Xbox must also be 192.168.1.X. You must use a unique and unused IP address for each device on your LAN. You would then FTP to the DHCP IP assigned to the Xbox (as reported by whatever dashboard you are using).

If you still have the router, the easiest solution would be to configure both your PC and Xbox to automatically grab an IP via DHCP from the router.

Took the router back. I'm just working with the crossover cable now. I'm thinking there's something in the PC's set up. Maybe a firewall on XP or something. I'm using a Dell Inspiron 1100.

Finally got it going! Called Dell Support and they helped me get it set up correctly. Thanks to JM, Silly Burrito, mixalot007, Drexl, sniper308, and finbogg for your help.

It was the way I had my network connection set up. Had to delete all network connections and start from scratch. I was using the WAN and I should have been using the Broadband (even though I do not have broadband, just dial-up).
