Nice mix of games for each console in Game Informer's list.
It's still good to have all 3. :) |

Out of the top ten games, nine are sequels.
This is a primary reason why I no longer play games very often. - David Stein |
I disgree with the idea that sequels are necessarily better or worse than brand-new games. Take each game on its own merits, that's my motto.
|
I don't know about anyone else, but I thought the game of the show was Tales of Symphonia for the GC. This game was simply awesome to watch.
I just might have to buy a GC for this game. Jeremy |

The limitation of sequels, is they really can't offer too much innovation. If they change too much, they'll alienate the fans of the original who want/expect more of the same. Thus sequels perpetuate the problem of getting the same gameplay rehashed over and over again. |

On the flip side, while new games might be innovative (in reality most are just rehashes of other games), it is often in the sequel(s) that the gameplay is tweaked and made better.

Most knew games are just crappy knock offs of hit games, and most sequels are just slightly improved versions of the originals. Just too much "same old, same old." |
but, there's nothing new under the sun... every game is a rehash of something.
i'm w/ groucho. if it's a good game, that's what it is. -- my top 6 games that i'm looking forward to: Forza sw: KotOR 2 Jade Empire GT4 FFXII Tales of Symphonia |

Come on, it's ALWAYS been that way. After the success of PAC-MAN there were a billion PAC-MAN clones. After the success of SUPER MARIO BROTHERS every other game was a side-scroller. Not to mention that this isn't unique to video gaming...it's prevelant in EVERY form of popular entertainment.
The reality is that there is more variety now than there has ever been...especially if one seeks out games outside of the big publishers, goes multi-console, and games on PC as well. Look at this forum...all the time I see threads about little-known (but GREAT) games that are overlooked. Meanwhile, the "big" hyped games have pages and pages of replies and comments. |
Although seeing nothing but sequels can get annoying, at least they don't follow suit with the movie industry. Most times, the sequel is better then the first game.

And I know it's the same way in other entertainment. My movie watching and especially music listening has dwindled some lately as well. I've been reading more, and mainly focusing on physical hobbies like weightlifting and running. I don't really expect it to improve, but I guess I still have some glimmer of hope for something new and exciting to come out. Be every E3 is just dissapointment for me for the most part. |
Originally posted by Josh Hinkle True enough, it's just gotten old after 20 years of gaming. :D I've been reading more, and mainly focusing on physical hobbies like weightlifting and running. In the meantime, enjoy the utterly non-repetitive activity of lifting a big heavy thing up and putting it back down again... :p Excuse me while I play another round of Munch Man. http://www.c64gg.com/Images/M/Munch_Man_64_menu.gif |

weightlifting and running is original??? c'mon man; they've been doing that since the dawn of time! i think the amphibians probably invented it (beta version).
|
I never said they were original, but I haven't been doing them for 20 years, so I'm not sick of them yet. :D
Plus they have health benefits, so there's more motivation than entertainment to do those activities. |
Video games have health benefits too, you know. For instance, they protect my pale skin from the hot hot sun.

Originally posted by Josh Hinkle I agree, to an extent. I'm just getting sick of playing the same stuff over and over, even in series I love like Zelda and Metroid. Granted in all you build up your health to go fight the bad guy, but that is standard to all games. I don't think the Zelda series are traditional sequels. IMO. Each is its own adventure and you don't have to know anything about the rest to play or enjoy each installment. Anyway, next poster... |
Majora's Mask was not pretty similar to Ocarina of Time.. in fact it is probably the most "different" Zelda game of the entire series. It looks and feels a bit similar because it's on the same engine, but that's about where it ends.
