Stealing bases in MVP '04 for PS2? Am I missing something?
GRRRRRR! This is so frustrating. Even with guys with basestealing speed of 90+, I'm getting caught 50-60 percent of the time... if not more.
Playing on the All-star level, and I've even tried things like bumping up the basestealing speed to +40 and taking the basestealing hesitation (or whatever it is called) down to -40... and I haven't seen much of a difference.
I do try to pick the right count, guess for a breaking pitch, etc... but to no avail.
Also, it seems like you just tell the runner to steal (but hitting the up arrow) and he goes when he wants to go... as opposed to running when you push it.
Am I missing something folks?

What's considered good at the ML level is about 70 percent.. and that includes pitchouts, etc.
But when the likes of Juan Pierre is getting caught 10 out of 14 times, that is not realistic.
Regardless, though, I'm just trying to determine if I'm doing something incorrectly. If that's the way the game is designed, I'll live with it.

40% is a good throw out rate, terrible base stealing percentage.

Make sure you're making your base runner take a bigger lead off the base. At least 1 step further. 2 steps will increase the chance of getting picked off. On the PC, you just tap the right analog stick up. Not sure if its the same on the PS2.

yeah it seems pretty impossible. i have the same problem, but i did manage 2 steal my last 3 in a row w/o being caught. for xbox i took a 2 step lead, hit the individual button for that runner (ie B, Y, X), and then hit up on the d pad. i made it in pretty easy using juan pierre & soriano.
originally i was hitting the L button 2 send my runners which caused a huge delay. hope that helps.

I steal bases on about 75-80% of my attempts. Two step lead and then hit up on the d-pad to steal as the pitcher pitches... and then a head-first slide into the base (I'll steal almost every time with a head-first slide... and get caught almost every time with a feet-first slide)

You have to remember to lead. When I first started I was getting caught stealing with fast guys. I upped the basestealing to 50 before I realized theres a way to lead off the bag. Now that I lead off I steal a good 85% of the time.

Are you "preloading" the steal attempts?
Here's what I do (generally I attempt when players' running abilities are 85+):
(Assuming I'm trying to steal second...)
Up on the right joystick
Up on the control pad
Left on the right joystick
Then as the player's approaching the base, I use Up-Right on the right joystick to slide and try and avoid the tag.

Stealing is not that hard people!!! C'mon!!!
Take two steps toward second base and be ready to go as soon as the pitcher throws to home!!! Also....do a head first slide to the right of the bag.
Anyone bowled over the catcher yet? That is awesome!!!
