Looks cool, FFVII is my first / favorite FF of all-time.

In all fairness, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within had pleanty of elements from the FF series. The problem is that mid production the fantasy elements were toned down and/or redefined (just look at how different the storyline would have been had the original opening been finished and kept) to fit more of a sci-fi story. That was because somewhere along the production some "genious" decided that Americans don't like fantasy (then why make a movie based on Final Fantasy?) and the changes were made. But, we still had a guy named Cid (or rather Sid), there was spiritual energy and nature at odds with man's scientific knowledge and technological advancements (thus the old magic versus technology theme) and a party of adventurers that team up to stop a megalomaniacal villain that is not the villain that was defined at the begining of the story.

The thing is, a lot of fans wanted an actual adaptation of one of the games or a movie with an original story that at least featured characters from the game. You won't believe how many fans I spoke to that were upset that the film looked like a FFVII clone but Cloud and Co. were nowhere in sight. And many bemoaned the lack of Chocobos (though I read in IMDB Aki has some printed on her PJs but I don't recall ever seeing her in her PJs at any part of the movie). Many more were outraged over the total lack of at least one summon.

Looks like the makers of this film have set out to address at least two of these complaints. Definitely a step in the right direction.

The ideas where there but it was lacking in that Final Fantasy feel.

There is no way this film will bomb in sales. It's doing things where TSW failed and it will appeal to fans of the series as well as others interested in the look.

TSW might have had ideas from the FF series, but that was not what the fans wanted and that's not what was the selling point of it.

You are absolutely right, Jackskeleton. Sad thing is that TSW was meant to have that FF feel (if not the characters) you speak of until the changes were made. Just look at the unfinished alternate opening on the DVD. Does that not seem like a take on the magitek armour of FFVI but in an FFVII setting? It's also obvious that the story would have progressed differently.
Spoiler:
Obviously "they're ghosts" was not going to be the big reveal toward the end.
It's too bad the filmmakers chose to steer away from their fan base.

I'm really looking foward to this film. It looks like it will definitely succeed were TSW failed (though it's still an okay sci-fi flick on it's own).

I think the saddest thing about this was that Sony was ambiguously listing this among the PSP's launch titles, deliberately letting people think it was either a new FF game or a remake of FFVII. But surprise! It's just a movie.

I'm sure there are FF fans who are excited about the idea of a movie with Cloud, Aeris, Sephiroth, et al, but the reality is, 90% of the general public will see the FF: Advent Children poster or trailer and think, "Oh yeah. Final Fantasy. That was that crappy CG movie that came out a few years ago. Why would I want to see a sequel to that???"

Holy shit, that looks awesome. Seeing that and hearing the music makes me want to play the game again. I'm glad to see there will be flashbacks to events in the game too.

The reason for the mixup is that Square intends to release this film on DVD and some sort of proprietary disc that only runs on the PSP. Because of that it has appeared on a few upcoming game lists.

Yes, but Sony did little to quell the rumors of a new FF game for the handheld, instead using it to drum up publicity, only revealing the truth once E3 started. You can't tell me that people would rather watch a FF movie on the PSP than play a new FF game.

Great new trailer. If only the moronic executives at Sony and Square had made THIS the Final Fantasy movie 3 years ago, they probably wouldn't have lost $100 million.

There's also a new trailer on the official website. It's not the same as the trailer that AonE subbed.

Well if the special edition of the game is indeed special, I hope that set gets released stateside. If not, I hope there's a separate release with just the second disc and non of that bonus toy crap.

Yes, it appears that since Square-Enix graciously chose to delay the US release until the holiday season, some unscrupulous types have ripped and subtitled the Japanese DVD. I hope no one goes and downloads it.
