Two year subscription service contract. Well thats eliminated budget and casual gamers already and probably any gamer under 18 or under the rule of their parents.

I figured it would be 30$ a month. Just cheap enough for them to say "Our service which offers you this many games, is cheaper than just ONE GAME on those other systems" :rolleyes:

"The service will offer game rentals as well, most often priced at $5 for three days" ... Jeez. Even Blockbuster gives you a week. And they don't charge you a 30$ cover charge.

Two Year Commitment x $30 Basic Subscription = $720
That's already well above what a budget gaming PC would cost you. Not to mention that you still have to pay for most of the games anway.

By the way, it's huge... the games looked fine on it, but it's basically you're just renting a computer because you have to buy the software at the same cost as in stores. It's a decent idea for newbs... serious gamers wouldn't go near it.

The idea alone makes little to no sense. Atleast with a real system you can actually play the games when it's outdated in a couple of years. With this you can't unless you subscribe.

Oh truly - it's quite the rip off... even if you've already bought a game for the PC you have to buy it again - even though this is a PC. They said "it will keep all your games patched and up to date automatically for you." in answer to my questioning the crappiness of that deal. Also - I kinda thought the controller was cool looking. At the same time, I thought it was stupid looking as well. It would be neat as a wireless home theater pc controller for the living room.

This will go the way of DIVX DVDs and the players that went with them...

How many people got the "I Believe" Phantom T-shirts from E3? Can anyone come up with situations that you can wear one of these without being laughed at?

I am blown away by just how bad this idea sounds- I mean just stunned. Who's going to pay that kind of money? And what game companies are going to support it?
That said, I can't wait to get it so I can play The Sims, Doom 2, Quake, Minesweeper, Command & Conquer, Age of Empires and whatever crazy new launch titles they'll have in their library.

This and the N-Gage are two prime examples of how over-"Hollywood"-ized the video game industry has become. Companies think it's a gold mine that they can just easily tap into. I'm not surprised at all that these companies think they can just barge in and start raking in bank.

I can already see the commercials for Phantom involving some loud Seattle rock or nu-Metal song, and a couple of "Extreme" looking guys (with chains and goatees) screaming about how much Phantom "Kicks total ass dude!!"

G4 had an interview from E3 with Kevin Bachus in which he said "We're targeting everyone from the casual gamer to the hardcore gamer." .. Okay, so you're targeting all gamers. Just say that. But here in reality...

-Hardcore gamers are going to want a souped up computer and a real copy of the game that they can put on any machine. They're not going to pay nearly retail for a game that is stuck in the phantom for all time, so that they can play it on their TV.

-Casual gamers aren't going to spend 30$ a month to play anything. Especially when there are extra costs included and what is bound to be horrible word-of-mouth.

Their business model looks good to investors, so he's probably planning to take the money and run again. I think with a little tweaking, this business model could work - instead of charging 30 bucks a month and also charging for the games, they should charge 30 bucks a month and allow 2 games free at a time... Someone downloads and plays Unreal 2004 and Battlefield Vietnam and then they decide they want Call of Duty, the service can disable or delete one of the games the user is tired of and download the new one. Then it would be a good deal. It would also help if they had exclusive content - they showed me 2 games, Unreal 2004 and some word jumble game that was a ripoff of BookWorm from popcap. -rolleyes- oooh exciting. *snore*
