Xbox is a Failure

http://www.gamespy.com/articles/506/...html?fromint=1

Basically, they have sold 400,000 units in Japan, which is equal to the sales acheived by the 3DO, a failure in its own right. Of course the MS guy who was interviewed placed some of the blame on Sony, but I wasn't expecting much more from these guys (after the propaganda they spouted about XNA).

Haha, nice thread title, your just asking for people to bitch about it.

I happen to enjoy my Xbox. I bet Microsoft doesn't think it is a failure, and that their numbers are meeting or greater than what they predicted they would be at this time.

Now how many people would have clicked on the threat if I added, "in Japan" to the end of the title? Not as many.

If MS doesn't think it is a failure, then they are smoking something. I remember talk about how they were expecting to keep up with Sony this time and pass them the next round. In fact, there was talk of a handheld in the works that got dropped when the Xbox wasn't selling as well as they had planned. They know they failed in Japan, which is good cause it will mean they will try harder next time.

Are you sure about that? I remember reading that they said they expected to be losing money for something like the next 5 years before they would start making a profit on the system.

But, regarding to Japan, yeah they are doing miserable there.

It didn't matter how many units they sold, they were still going to lose for the first 5 years. If they sold 1 consoles, they would have lost money; if they sold 1 billion consoles, they would have lost money for the first five years. They planned to lose money on the consoles, but also planned to sell a whole lot more.

That's better than I thought they were doing in Japan. Surprisingly better. Sounds like you missed the point of the article, but I don't know.

I don't think it was a good idea for Mircosoft to get into console games. Sony is just too strong and has better game developers on board.

And where would the problem be in that exactly?

I thought it was an excellent idea. MS brought a lot of new things to the table. Built-in ethernet and HDD. A truly organized online plan and truly battling Sony in the market with their pricing.

I think it was a marvelous idea... We needed a good american console replacement for the Dreamcast - which arguably was more japanese than american. Sony bought their game developers just like MS has... plus, Microsoft has been publishing games for a long time before they ever made a console. On top of that, it's a brilliant console with excellent first party software and 3rd party support. The fact that it exists will drive Sony to make a better product next go around and even include things like a network adapter and a hard drive in their next console. Competition for your dollars can only result in better products and better software... how is this a bad thing in any way shape or form?

The subject line on this thread is so bad. Culturally it's very tough to package any product in a world marketplace to fit all markets. Yes, microsoft will have to re-vamp their marketing in Japan for their next console, but in this same light so will nintedo have to re-vamp their marketing in the western world of course. Sony may be the top dog now, but it to will have watch world market treads also.

Oh BTW.
I guess Rockstar should drop GTA 3 since it only sold 400K in Japan out of 8 mil(NPD) worldwide.

of course, Game Cube is the superior system, so it would kick x-box in japan, and i am sure soon, it will beat x-box in america, and over take ps2 really soon with its superior graphics, raw hardware power and controls.

True, but these were not designed for the Japanese market, the Xbox was.

I think he might be basing it on the fact there is no special edition of the Xbox that features any characters from Hello Kitty.

Although i would totally buy a Batz Maru one...
