Gave up video games for Lent

OK, so about three or four weeks ago after several late nights (despite having to wake up at 6:00 am), I told my wife that I would stop playing XBOX for the 40 days of Lent. I had just finished GTA 3 and didn't plan on playing Vice City until after Easter, but I popped it in to "just explore." Big mistake. I did one mission, then another, etc. I was really starting to get into it the weekend before Ash Wednesday. Stayed up to 1:00 Sunday, 1:00 Monday and on 11:59 Tuesday (since 12:00 would have technically been "during Lent").

For six days, I spent more time with the kids (didn't force them into bed so early to play the game), did a lot of work at home and even took a couple of baths (hey, we spent thousands on a new bathroom, complete with a jacuzzi). I caught up on TiVo. I started reading again. I came back to this forum after months away. Yes, I will make it the 40 days.

Still, I miss playing Vice City. I hope I don't forget geography that was so hard to learn.

I meant to do this also, as I had/have been putting waaay too much time in Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 2 lately.

Which reminds me, I need to change my sig...I stopped that tradition last year.

So during Lent are you supposed to fast or abstain from things you enjoy? I thought the only thing you had to do was not eat meat?

I was raised a Catholic until I was about eight. I've forgotten most of the traditions over the years. I think the only thing my family did during Lent was eat at Skippers on Fridays.

You don't have to do anything for Lent. It's a choice you make in a effort to understand yourself and your spirituality better.

Not eating meat on Fridays and Ash Wed. is a tradition of fasting that exists because the Church asks its members to observe it in order to create something that gives all it's members pause.

Until I actually tried to give something up that was hard for me, I never understood what the sacrifice could do for my soul. At times It is very hard, but at others times I feel more enlightened then ever before.

Goodluck on not playing video games!

They need to make a GTA game thats based on a real city layout so memorizing it would be educational. If they did, i'd give it up for LENT.

My 3 year old son is happy, but he misses playing Roadblasters (on the Midway Arcade Treasures disc), which we played about ten minutes each day. (He calls it "go away cars" because you shoot the cars, and now screams that phrase whenever we're stuck in traffic.)

I would give up my xbox for lent but as a CPA I already pretty much give up gaming until April 15th. The best I can do is get a show watched each night on the ReplayTV. I was thinking of instead of "giving something up" to "do something I should be doing"... sort of like giving up NOT doing something good, like calling my family more frequently.

My roomie is a CPA. He's working at least 65 hours a week until April 15th. I guess this is normal for the job?

My hat goes off to you man, that is not an easy thing to give up. I know I would have difficulties doing so because I'm just hooked on Champions of Norrath for PS/2. I've been known to play that game in 7 to 8 hour chunks!

My guess is that most folks in this forum gave up sex for Lent, as part of an ongoing involuntary celibacy.

That pretty much happened after getting married and was finalized after having kids.
