Is it OK to play DVD's on PS2's?

I have heard conflicting reports on whether it is bad to play DVDs on PS2s. Is this the truth?
Search is difficult for this subject because of the terms, so any help would be appreciated.

Its fine. That is only a myth that it hurts the PS2 when you watch DVDs on it.

The only DVD player I have owned is my PS2's(I'm cheap). I've watched movies since Sept. 2001 on them. The only problems I had was a dre prone PS2(unrelated to movies) and now with my newer PS2, dual-layer games and movies make the PS2 tick 6 times before spinning up and loading. Not sure why it does that, no dre's on this PS2 though.

I plan on buying a stand alone DVD soon though, since I'm thinking of trying out Netflix, so my movie watching will be quite a bit higher than normal.

No problems that I could see.

Of course, if you're watching a lot of movies, in addition to playing a lot of games, you'll be using it a lot and it will wear down sooner.

But, still, as long as it's not defective, you should be good to go for at least a couple years I'd think.

Every time you play a DVD on a PS2, somewhere, a DVD player is crying.

I used to play DVDs on my PS2 until I got my home theater system, never had any problems. Playing games and watching movies were fine for me.

Make sure that it is set up to display in that format on both the main settings page for the PS2 and the DVD settings.

i tried that a while back, it's not a real big deal anymore, i only used the ps2 to play other region dvds when i was using the region dvd x, but since i have several region free players now, i'm not too worried about it. i called sony and asked them and they didn't know, but i wasn't about to send it back and pay 120 bucks for them to look at it.

thanks, i appreciate the help.
