Can you replace a mod chip on a console?

(This is not a thread on piracy, more like the opposite)

Like I posted on the forum a while back, I bought a moded import PS2. I think it's a V.1, one of the first batch or something (schp1000). Anyways, it plays japanese games without any problem but it has a huge amount of problems reading backups and wont play north american games or ps1 games at all. (I borrowed Lunar from my brother and couldn't play it, copied it to try, couldn't play it either).

Anyways, to make a long story short, I am wondering if I can have this mod chip removed and have it modded again with a chip that would play north american games. I'm thinking of the duo chip or another no swap chip, I dont care for dvd capability, I just want to be able to play both import and north american games (legit ones, I dont care if it reads copied cds/dvds or not)

There shouldn't be any problem with that. If the chip was installed correctly all it would take is desoldering from the board, at which point you should have a regular unmodded Japanese PS2 which should be ready for another chip if you so wish it.

Sadly, there's no easy way to just play imports on a PS2..

Thanks Pixy, I've a savy friend whom I will bring it to so he can take a peek and remove it if he can.

Any suggestions on mod chips that can play LEGIT north american games? Preferably with No Swap (would a V1 duo chip do this?)
