I just a got a Sony KF42WE610 LCD RPTV and will be connecting my XBOX to it tonite!! I was wondering how much improvement will I get (I know it will be a lot of improvement). I' m curious to see how others were impressed with their switch from a NTSC tv to HDTV.

I have the same tv and the first game I played was ESPN basketball in 720 p widescreen. It was a HUGE step up from standard def.

I have the 50" model and it is awesome. My previous TV was a 32" Sony tube and the diff is amazing. I'm especially loving the games that are made for widescreen, like Crimson Skies, SSX3, GTA3 and Simpsons Hit and Run.

apollo, if you have any regrets buying the tv, pop in Amped 2, (if you do not have it, go buy it now... ok you back) the greatest looking game for xbox, Sims looks great as well in 720p, so does Sonic Heroes

I have been debating whether I should get the Samsung DLP or the Sony LCD.... Did you compare the two to see which yields a sharper picture (esp playing games)? Also, is there any burn-in problems with LCDs?

I'm all sold on the DLP. I found it really depends which picture you like better because people argue till they're blue in the face about which one is technically better. I liked how the DLP looked better, but they both look great and waaaay better than my 27" trinitron.

here's my personal opinion:

the Grand VVega III LCD tv's look better than the current generation DLPs. Apollo got a Grand VVEga III KFxxWE610. blacks are better, i didn't see any motion blur or artifacts, etc when directly comparing the 2. you still have to worry a little about dead pixels (although i didn't see any in the demos)

having said that, the new generation of DLPs are coming out in a month or 2 - and the one that i want, in June.

also, the new samsung dlps have several other improvements:
all component inputs will support all HD modes
2 HD inputs (1 dvi/1 hdmi)
7 segment color wheel for better blacks
higher contrast ratio

and the tantus that i want will have a built in HD tuner (atsc)

I looked at a Samsung DLP vs Sony LCD projector, in my opinion I couldn't see a big difference. Some say that the black in LCD projectors isn't really black more a dark gray. I couldn't see this at all. Burn-in is not a problem with LCD projector compared to Rear projectors TVs.

The only downside to DLP is the "rainbow effect". Since it uses a spinning color-wheel, some people claim that there are visible rainbows on the screen when you move your head from side to side. However, I didn't notice it when I was deciding between the Sammy DLP and the Sony LCD. I went with the 42 inch Sony due to the fact that it was over $700 cheaper than the 43 inch Sammy.

yeah price is a big factor. I went with the Sony 50" because it was also $700 cheaper than the 50" Samsung.

um, whatever you do, don't look into how you can see it. once you start seeing it, you can't stop seeing it on DLP tvs. i cannot see it either but i think it is real for some people.

Wow, thanks for all the great info on the DLPs.... I am salivating over the new pedestal model but my wife seems to think they are ugly.... Oh well, at least a tabletop would be good, I will wait till those to hit the market before getting one!

oh, and one final note regarding the samsung dlps vs the sony lcds. the sony lcds have a slightly higher pixel count - 1386 x 788 vs 1280x720.

why does this matter? not sure if that is the reason, but when i was comparing the 2 models, both being fed by the same signal, the sony seemed to be cutting off some of the image on the left. all the other tvs were showing the full width.

the salesguy didn't have a good reason why that was so.

any thoughts?

I have owned a 43" 46" 50" DLP's and have owned or own the 36"(4x3) 40"(4x3) Grand Wega's and have also owned the 50" Grand Wega II, I currently own the 50" Panasonic LCD, only because I bought it for $2k, I just sold it to my former boss for $2k, so that I can get the 73" DLP, when it comes out (hopefully 4thQ this year

LCD: major turnoff for me any many others, is lack of black levels, if you think they look good-god bless you, and the screen door effect, most cannot see it on my tv, and others on htf.com say that dont see it past 10 ft, I have see my at up to 20 ft away

the black levels are much better on the new sony grand vvega III lcds. w/ the added benefit of better shadow detail than DLPs.

i couldn't see the screen door effect on the new lcds either. i think lcd technology has really improved (but, i'm still going to wait for the new DLPs)

I own the Samsung 46" DLP and it's great for games. The only problem is if you use the Xbox dashboard a lot. It runs at 480i and the component inputs on the current DLPs are two 480p/720p/1080i and one 480i/480p. I have mine on the higher-end compoent since I don't use the dashboard at all.

I have seen the rainbows, but it's few and far between. I can see them if I do a quick glance at the screen, but it's never been a problem. Unless you see them with direct viewing, the DLP is a great tv to have.
