Then I wonder what I was playing... or when and where I played it. I was certain it was on my PC, but I can't find anything... maybe it was at E3? Could've been a different game, but all this time I thought it was this one. Maybe it was Nosferatu? This is gonna bug me now.

You can get it through www.3dgamers.com

I gave this a whirl. The graphics are very good. The physics are great. I liked the atmosphere as well. But the gameplay is very shallow. It's basically Serious Sam with a medieval/horror setting. You do nothing more than run around mowing down rooms full of guys who's AI consists of "run/shoot at the player."

I also thought that the "Standard" difficulty was too hard (mostly because they've disabled the save function for the demo), whereas the "Easy" difficulty was ridiculously easy.

I think I've reached the point in my life where this style of gameplay doesn't appeal to me anymore. I had my fill with the first Serious Sam. Indeed the gameplay was too shallow.

For the engine alone, this game is worth checking out. It easily looks as good as Half Life 2, and the physics are incredible as well. But, as far as gameplay goes...yeah its basically Serious Sam. One thing that bugs the hell out of me is that there is no crouch button!

With all the dudes throwing things at you, I really wanted to crouch and lean behind stuff. That would have been pretty cool...roll a barrel down the street and use it as cover.

The game makes great use of the Havok physics engine. I had a lot of fun goofing around with the hanging skeletons.

Currently waiting in line at FilePlanet for my download to start. Hopefully this wont melt my GeForce 2 GTS (the UT2004 demo works just fine fortunately)

This game also uses the Unreal engine, so you should be just fine.

Cool... I'll get Max Payne 2 once I perform my upgrade for HL2 and Doom 3...

I tried the painkiller demo, and thought it was pretty fun. I haven't really played any FPS where masses of enemies just rush you ala Doom 1/2, so it was kind of cool, though tough (esp the Temple level)... it actually ran fine using the default settings (1024x768 with high textures all around) though it did pause occationally and take some time to load the levels. The boss level was a different story... lots of slowdowns. Those columns flying appart sure looked sweet though.

Right now I have a Athlon XP 1700+ with a GeForce 2 GTS 32 meg card and 256 megs of ram... I plan on keeping the CPU, upgrading the video to at least a Radeon 9600 Pro, though possibly the 9700 Pro if they've dropped more in price by the time HL2 or Doom 3 comes out, and at least doubling my ram. That sound adequate?

Brian

**edit** I see Doom 3 is not on that list... I guess they're using their own physics engine?

Sorry, you must be BLIND. I said it easily LOOKS as good as HalfLife 2. I never said that it played as good, or infact, anything like HalfLife 2.

Gameplay wise this is little more than Serious Sam with zombies.

I think that Painkiller uses Havok 2.0 alot better than Deus Ex. Max Payne 2 definitely used it the worst, everything seems so light.

Check out the 3rd level in the Painkiller demo (the boss fight), those columns falling over are incredible.

Finally got around to checking it out... I have played this before, just don't remember where... best guess would be at E3. I wasn't too impressed. It did look good, and the first level was decent, but then by the second level it was simply Serious Sam all over again. Enemy AI was craptacular...

/start enemy ai program
command_run towards player and kill
/end program

or something like that... Graphically it did look pretty good. There's always room for mindless shooters like this, but I've lost the taste for them. As for the physics, they were good but not great. Mostly a problem with mass to weight ratios. The big carts in the first level moved like they weighed the same as those little pots in the second (third) level. It's just a minor complaint. I'm sure it's gonna be a solid game for action junkies, but with no story I'm kinda lookin at it as "been there, done that". I'd say it would maybe serve as a remake of Heretic or Hexen or something.

As for the comparison to Half Life 2 - there's no comparison. HL2 easily blows this away. If you don't think so, you ought to check out some videos made using the DX9 features.

Sorry, but I have played both, and graphically they are comparable. Sure it might not have all the bells & whistles that HL2 features, but it still looks very, very nice.

But, who cares anyway, Painkiller isn't that fun. Maybe if it had some sort of a story, and more variety, but it doesnt.

I believe I said it does look good... but with all the bells and whistles, HL2 looks way better. Even without the bells and whistles, HL2 looks better. It's just my opinion. I've played around with the HL2 leak as well (which is what I assume you're talking about since there has been no HL2 demo release and I hadn't heard you worked for Valve), and it was an unfinished product... furthermore, my video card couldn't display all the bells and whistles cuz it doesn't have full dx9 support (it's a Geforce 4). We don't have to argue about it, we can agree to disagree on that point - more importantly, we do agree that Painkiller isn't alot of fun and lacks story and variety.

Sounds good to me.
