Looking for Myst-like PC games...

My 12 yr old and I just finished Myst III: Exile, and we're looking for another similar puzzle/exploration game we can play together.

Other titles we have played:
Myst
Riven
The Crystal Key
AmerZone
Grim Fandango

If you can find it, the original Shivers by Sierra Online is a must. Came out not too long after the original Myst. That game rocks. Skip the 2nd one.

A good website for adventure titles is:

http://www.justadventure.com

There's tons of reviews of titles on this site, it's well worth it to take a look.

Obsidian was an interesting Myst-type game with a surreal Brazil feel to it.

Ah, fond memories of getting it free through Riddler.com many years ago....

Do not get The Crystal Key, or anything else by this company. (This includes Schism: Mysterious Journeys, another game with awfully Myst-like screenshots, and a few pyramid-exploration games.)

Maybe three months ago, I found myself in the exact same situation as you: had just finished Myst III and was looking for something similar. So I raided the local Walmart and came away with three games by this company (net cost, $25.)

Simply put, these games are beyond awful. It's the difference between Pac-Man and Atari Pac-Man: you can tell that some of the same game elements are there, but they're done so badly that you end up loathing the experience.

I remember an adventure game by the name of Lighthouse. I do remember enjoying it, but not much else. You may want to check it out.

Sadly, we already muddled thru The Crystal Key a year or so ago.
Very disappointing.

The 7th Guest
The 11th Hour
although check the content on these, there might be some "horror" elements inappropriate for 12-year-olds.

If you enjoyed Grim Fandango, the Monkey Island series of games is a blast.

Monkey Island is great.

See if you can get your hands on the old Sam and Max Hit the Road. Considered one of the best ever, should be a sequel soon.

For more up to date stuff, Syberia was Game of the Year for adventure like two years ago.

i read The Longest Journey was pretty good.

especially the Space Quest series. fun adventure with lots of laughs.
Good stuff i tell ya!!

This was the one that I thought of first. There really aren't a whole lot of these types of games anymore.

The new Broken Sword is suppose to be pretty good also. And one more vote for Monkey Island..my favorite adventure game series of all time. If you're looking for an older PC game, with a more adult theme try to find Ripper. It's a futuristic Jack the Ripper story staring Christopher Walken as the lead. I think it was on like 7 CD's becaue of all the FMV of real actors. That or Phantasmagoria by Sierra.

You should check out Uru: Ages Beyond Myst. My wife really enjoyed it. She also checked out the online beta, but I believe that it's going offline due to funding issues.

I thought Shivers was terrible.

Keep an eye out for games from Dreamcatcher and TheAdventureCompany. They release a new adventure game like every month between the two of them.

Siberia is decent. Cyberia was good (older game). Bioforge was excellent (don't know if it holds up). Black Mirror (new game) sucks - is boring as hell. Traitors Gate and games like that are middling. Uru: Ages Beyond Myst is awesome. Runaway is decent.

Re: Looking for Myst-like PC games...

I highly recommend Barrow Hill.

It's one of the my favorite Myst-like games with a somewhat dark/suspenseful twist..it lets you move quickly from one screen to the next (no waiting) and it's got a ton of my favorite thing: atmosphere.

If we're talking old-school, one of my all-time fav classics is The Labyrinth of Time. If you can get a copy, I suggest downloading DOSBox so you can play it on your PC. The unique combo of music, surreal atmosphere, and gameplay all make me very happy.

I *still* listen to the music on my iPod today..

Re: Looking for Myst-like PC games...

The Journeyman Project games are old, but still very fun.

Harlan Ellison's "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream" is definitely worth checking out. It was a game ahead of it's time. Had Ellison had complete control, the game would have been un-winnable as Ellison wanted to make a game based on morality, where the goal was, "how good can you lose?"

Star Trek: 25th Anniversary and Judgment Rites are must plays, especially if you can find CD copies as the entire original series cast lends their voices. Together they are like a mini, lost season.

Wow - freaky! I thought I'd see who is looking for Myst-like PC games, and it was ME

I started this thread in '04 and I'm talking about my 12-year-old, who is 19 now and currently finishing up her freshman year at college.

Man on man time flies....
