EGM: It was a bad year for...GC

I bought my Cube the day it came out, picked up Rogue, loved it...but since I bought a PS2 last year it has seen very little use. I loved Metroid Prime, and RE, but since those two games nothing much has held my attention on the Cube.
It is a great system, but it just doesn't get the use my PS2 does.

HAHA PS2 over powers GC
Dude the GC is much more powerful. My company supplied the chips
It would be a better statement to say, I choose XBOX/PS2 multi-console games over GC because the damn controller sucks!
I do think the XBOX is more 'powerful' than the GC though.

I purchased 9 3rd party games that were released in 2003 for my GC.
GC losing 3rd party support: Yep, a few western devs. Big deal? Nope since those particular devs always shat on the GC userbase anyway by releasing the same game on the GC a year after the other 2 consoles.
GC had a bad 2003?:If they did I would hate to think about what kind of year MS has had.
Is it troublesome they are losing 3rd parties?Somewhat, I'd be more concerned if it was Japanese and not mediocre western devs though.
Can a person get by with just having a GC? Hell no, same goes for the Xbox though. Only a PS2 owner can get by as a single system owner.
Is the Gamecube a sinking ship? Nope, but it is taking on a little water.
Yes, Nintendo has some 3rd party problems. They are nowhere near as bad as last generation though.
I'm not sure how the GC is "underpowered" since it's more powerful than a PS2.

But it is an underpowered machine.
If a title is released on all three, I don't even consider the GC version. That has got to hurt Nintendo if I'm not the only one.
I think Nintendo thought they could undercut the other two by being so much cheaper but in the end, "Its the games, stupid".
I thought the machine was outdated the minute it hit shelves. I never thought that with the PS2 or Xbox.
Nintendo has one more chance to get it right in re: hardware, but they may have already lost me.
Zelda and Metroid were good but I expected much more from the Mario games (Super and Kart).
It looks like to me the GC was just an excuse for them to push their hundreds of cheap to make Mario Party games.

Lets see, 3rd party games, PoP, BGE, Splinter Cell, Metal Arms: Glitch in the System, it sure was a bad year for 3rd party GC games.

GC is more powerful than the PS2, most 3rd party games (PoP, BGE) look very close to X-Box equivalents, some 1st party games look even better (Metroid Prime)
Exactly how is it outdated when it uses more powerful technology than the PS2? Don't tell me DVD player because that has nothing to do with games.
Last time I was at the store, I only saw 2 mario party games (one having just come out recently), where are these hundreds of cheap mario party games because I can't find them?
There are plenty of unique titles, just take the blinds off your eyes. (unless you were being sarcastic the whole time)
will this get in before the thread gets locked

I thought the Cube actually had the most improvement this year. If you look in today's Financial Times section you'll notice an article about how the system sales in the game industry fell over 25% (makes sense since there were no new system), while the Cube was actually the only one with "increasing" sales.
Information can be skewed any way you want it, and maybe Nintendo should just be a publisher, but the system has its own unique strengths like the two others and is all but a pushover. It has more than a few worthy exclusives, so it's not a bad buy.
Course we all would like "one system" to have all the "great games", but I don't see that ever happening.

I would rather play one great first party title than ten mediocre third party titles.
The third party titles that come out for the GCN are the only ones I would be interested in anyways. ie splinter cell, prince of persia, soul caliber, sims, EA games. There haven't been ANY games that were not exclusive to a console that I have wanted that haven't come out on the gamecube.

EGM is just another hype-outlet.
The GC had a fantastic year and is selling like hotcakes.
I'm so glad I got mine, my PS2 has gotten ZERO use since
I got the cube (and I have access to pretty much the entire
PS2 library since a family member works for SCEA)
A gamer can't get by with just a GC? That's nonsense!
I would probably ditch my PS2 if it weren't for Amplitude.

Take a look at Soul Calibur 2 on PS2, then play it on the GC you'll see a very big difference.

About Soul Calibur: Yes, but a very marginal difference, and the Xbox version still humiliates both. Once you get Xbox to do VGA [which my friend back in high school did] it is better than even Gamecube with progressive scan. The excess of games on PS2 makes up for one game being less than it, if SC2 was an online game on PS2 [for free] and on Xbox Live, the Nintendo version would be even more insignificant...
X Box and Nintendo are in the same boat, they have little third party support [though Microsoft has more right now] a smaller install base, and significant first party games [Halo, Amped, Xbox Live, Metroid, Zelda, Mario]
The only difference is how much you can actually do with an Xbox out of the package, and how much more you can do once you modify it. Xbox also appears more to older demographics...
I'm happy with my PS2 and I want an Xbox [DDR Ultramix, Ninja Gaiden, True Fantasy] and will probably get one once it hits the Japanese pricing here [$200 with one or two games, Xbox live service, and an extra controller]

Talking about power...
March 2003 EGM
Afterthoughts: Sonic Heros
EGM: The GC and Xbox verisons run smoother than the PS2's. What's up with that?
Takashi Lizuka: Of course, as you know, the Playstation 2 does NOT have the most favorable amount of memory..so Sonic team created a basic ideal of how Heroes should play then arranged it so that it would work on GC, XBOX, and PS2. So, I had to sacrifice a certain amount of technical performance to order to offer the same expericence on PS2.

I would be interested in seeing the numbers. I believe that the XBox has slipped into third worldwide although the XBox may be clinging to 2nd here in the US.
I really am expecting MS to do a price drop down to under $129 to stimulate sales. They can not be happy letting the GC even get close here in the US.

I'm no Nintendo fanboy either, but here is a prediction. They will hit the market with the next system before Sony or MS. It will not be nearly the jump in power/graphics, etc. that we had from the last bunch (Dreamcast excluded), and as a result, there will not be a huge rush to buy it. Plus, Nintendo will realize the error of their ways in having a multi-use machine (dvd player, mp3 player, etc.) and will only make the problem worse as the price will be too high for a mchine that is not much better.
They will need a huge game to launch and probably a slew of them to make it over that hump. But they still won't get out of the hardware biz.

Besides, for the most part the differences between the XBox and GC versions of the same game are usually minute compared to the PS2 version.
*aside* What I don't get is if they can make games like GT4 and FFX etc to look that good why can't 3rd party dev. use the hardware available to make it look as good as the other two versions. I don't think Sonic Heroes is as graphics intensive as GT4

I bought my 'Cube at launch and own no other console. I love it.
My little bro has a PS2, and I've played it sometimes, but the games just don't appeal to me. I would love to play the FF games, but they are to time consuming and repetitive for a casual gamer like me.
Same goes for the XBox. Sure there are a few games I would play, but not enough to warrant going out and getting one, besides the controllers for this console leave me wanting.
I guess you can lump me into the Nintendo fan-boy club (having owned every console they've released), but for me its always been about the 1st party titles. I could care less about the national market, as long as I can get the console I want and the games are interesting enough, I'll keep buying them.
I'm just a little mad that Rare jumped ship, I want another StarFox Adventures game.

From the Sonic Adventure 3 EX Plus Alpha thread:
Graphically, Sonic Heroes will run at 60 fps for GameCube and Xbox owners, while PS2 owners will receive 30 fps to keep the game from graphically tearing, according to SEGA. The GameCube version will run in Progressive Scan, and the Xbox in 720p, while the PS2 version won't receive any visual enhancements.
