Just to make you jealous...

I picked up a copy of Super Metroid on ebay and am playing it for the first time. Exceedingly amazingly good game...though I think I liked Prime a little better. Anyway, it's not every day you get to play the "best game ever" for the first time.

Just to make you jealous...

I bought it when it first came out and still have my copy in mint condition.

Still- congratulations! Great game. I can still remember fighting Kraid for the first time. I haven't played the original though. I think I'll pick it up when it comes out on the GBA in a couple of weeks.

Just out of curiousity, how much is it going for on e-bay these days?

i wasn't trying to sound smug...it's just nice to do a little 2D retro gaming.

i paid $14 shipped, but they generally go in the $20 + shipping range...more if you still have the box and instructions.

is the one coming out for GBA "Super Metroid" or is it something new? I was under the impression that it was a new game. If it is super metroid, that will be a bit disappointing as i probably would have bought it for GBA SP.

The one coming out for the GBA is a remake of the first Metroid. It looks pretty cool and has some added features (such as new levels).

I'm getting back into 2D gaming lately myself thanks to the GBA. I just picked up Mario Superstar Saga (lots of fun) and Sword of Mana (which I haven't opened yet due to the amount of games thatI'm playing at the moment).

What's the point? I never understood why people buy games and don't play them. I mean if you have stacks and stacks of unopened games (some people do) maybe you should stop buying them!!

I used to buy a ton of games and maybe play 1/3 of them, and finish even less.

I think it is a compulsive behavior, just like anything else, except the only real bad side effect is that you don't have alot of $$ in your bank. It is certainly alot less expensive than gambling (I know people who routinely spend 5k in a casino, every other week).

But, those days are over. I try to buy games really cheap and try to finish it too so I can resell them or trade them in while they are still worth something. I don't need a bunch of cds sitting there collecting dust. God knows I already have enough of those!

Wow. What do your friends do, that can afford to spend 5k every 2 weeks in a casino?!? That's over 130k a year... You must roll with some execs or dealers, one of the two

They're drug dealers... obviously.

Just to add my own oblique, but still vaguely related comment:

I own a Gamecube, but don't own Metroid, (or Zelda for that matter) and don't intend on every playing it. Never played the 2D games when they came out either since I was never into Nintendo that much.

I hate sci-fi, fantasy, lazer blasting things set in space stations with slimy monsters etc... but gawd, it's about the top selling game for GC, would I still like it!??!

Don't feel the need to acknowledge this post btw...

First, I'm just amazed that you actually live in a town called Racoon City. Is there perchance an umbrella corporation around?

Other than Metroid Prime and Zelda, I can't think of many reasons to own a Gamecube. I cannot imagine anyone anywhere not appreciating Metroid Prime on some level. For example, I hate first person shooters, but I loved it. If nothing else, rent it and give it a spin for a few days. I guarantee you'll buy it.

Super Metroid gets cooler by the second BTW.

So many memories of Super Metroid. My friends and I would start playing it early in the morning, and not stop till we beat the entire game. We must of did this like one a week in the summer. I recommend Metroid Fusion for the GBA also. It's short, but sweet.

Actually I don't...

I just put that in there one time after finishing Resident Evil 0... see sig also. The closest thing to a T-virus we've had around here is Hepatitus.

I'll probably end up buying both Metroid and Zelda, and enjoying them. They're just not the style of game that appeals. However, they're probably (like you say) classic games within their genre... which I suppose gives them a universal appeal.

I still hate lazer alien blasting space station levels though...

Actually, I only buy games very cheaply, whenever I see deals. Final Fantasy Origins was the last "full-price" new game I got, and even then it was a birthday gift. Before that, we're probably talking NES. My backlog is pretty light -- maybe 10 games or so, mostly Final Fantasy titles (I'm playing through them all in order) -- but I've suddenly decided to play through Ultima VII (all four parts) again, and I am halfway through Eternal Darkness. Rest assured, I'll get to them all.

Congrats!! Glad to hear you are enjoying it!! Just imagine how it felt to play it for the first time in 1994! The graphics, music, and atmosphere were mindblowing at the time. The amazing gameplay is what's really stood the test of time, in my opinion. Discovering shortcuts, new hidden items, new routes.. the world of Zebes in Super Metroid is a masterpiece of level design. When you master the wall jump, the shine spark, and to a lesser extent, bomb bouncing, you'll be amazed at how many different paths you can take. In my glory days I could get 2:00-2:30 with 100% items.

When you're done with the game you may want to check this out, espically if you've enjoyed the music in the game:
