Well, I'm not quite as happy as that, but pretty good news nonetheless.

I would prefer a new story and smaller character sprites (they're huge!), but it looks promising.

one of my favorite games

but a new character..named Coal..
Coal is what they named the main character.

Kinda sucks all those shots are from the second fight and first town. I can't wait to see more.

Does Shining Force have anything to do with Shining in the Darkness for Genesis way back?

I did enjoy that game

the two were developed by the same development team? some cross over in appearance, but game play was different...

Shining Force is a strat-RPG.

Yeah.. Shining in the Darkness is in the same "Series" per se.. but nothing similar about the games. Shining Soul on GBA is also part of it.. I think there's more but me no remember.

It's the first in the series.

Shining in the Darkness
Shining Force <-- Looks like this new game is a remake of this
Shining Force II
Shining Force III

There are a couple Game Gear games in there as well.

Shining Force II was the first RPG I ever played and it launched my interest in the genre. In other words, I suppose I'll be obligated to buy this.

There's also a Sega CD Shining Force game (I know, because I own it).

Shining Through the Darkness is a total dungeon crawler game. Go to town, get some stuff, go in a dungeon. Totally unlike Shining Force (edit: It's still part of the series, sort of, but just unlike the other games).

Any game starting with Shining on a Sega system is in the "series".. Shining Force CD for Sega CD was the 2 Game Gear games remake.

Shall I rattle off a complete list?

Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intention
Shining Force Gaiden: Journey to the Land of the Dark God (20 years later)
Shining Force Gaiden II: The Dark God's Awakening
Shining Force Gaiden III: Final Conflict (a few years later)
Shining Force II: Seal of the Ancients (~50 years later)
Shining Wisdom (a few years later)
Shining in the Darkness (~25 years later)
Shining the Holy Ark ("many years")
Shining Force III
Shining Soul (dunno)
Shining Soul II (dunno)

All of these take place in the same universe and are part of one storyline. (I've listed them in order of the timeline.)

*Shining Force Gaiden I and II were collected in Shining Force CD. Shining Force Gaiden II was also released in the US under the title Sword of Hajya.

If you like Strategy/RPG stuff you'll probably dig it. sarareku claims that Shining Force is the first strategy game ever created, however, it was released in 1992 and Nintendo had 2 games already, Famicom Wars in 1988 and Fire Emblem in 1991.. both of which have new versions on the GBA here.. so if you like Advance Wars or Fire Emblem.. it's the same style of game.

Breakfast, don't forget Shining Force III was 3 games, only 1 of them released here.

I did not know about Sword of Hajya, nice bit of triva.

I never knew that...at least now I know I didn't miss out on those games.

Also, if you like Shining Force, the first Vandal Hearts on Playstation played fairly similarly to the Shining Force games (with the excellent edition of fountains of blood).

See but here is the thing, Shining Force is the first strategy RPG brought to AMERICA. I was always well aware of Fire Emblem and have played that too [before the GBA release]

Either way, it is a shame that SF 3-2 AND 3-3 were not released..I have the Japanese ones but I can only read the menu's and battle screens and basic commands..not the story though..I know there is a translation but I don't want to ruin the experience by reading a printed text file every second

Shining the Holy Ark is part of the "Shining in the Darkness" series of Shining games, traditional RPG. STHA was incredible with its first person view, great 3d graphics, fun battle system, and good story,it was also the first RPG to involve pokemon style collecting.

Shining Wisdom and Shining Soul 1/2 are part of the action RPG series of Shining games, but Shining Wisdom is so way better, with more gameplay styles and better story and better graphics.
