They are flash technology and should have no battery of any kind. There is a limit to the number of times they can be overwritten (probably in the hundreds of thousands), but I have never reached it on any card I owned.
Same technology as the SD and memory sticks used in cameras and PDAs.

Thankfully the Xbox has a built in hard drive for saves (hope that didn't sound like a sales pitch), which I hope other companies think about doing in the future. (Though I still back up my Halo saves to memory cards before going to LAN parties, since everyone likes to create their own profiles or mutilate the good ones I have stored on the disk)

I like the memory card system. I can borrow games and not worry about my save files. Plus I like the permanence of them. The only thing I would like is a system to transfer them to the pc. I know the psx had one as did the N64 and you can do it with the GBA (all third party of course) but nothing has come out for GCN yet.
Also I heard that N is finally releasing the SD adapter. Anyone else hear about this. I thought I heard that it is Japan only and that it would only work with games which support it. Confirmation?

My Sega Master System, Phantasy Star 1 cart is finicky about saving. Haven't played it in a couple of years so I wouldn't doubt if it wouldn't hold a save at all anymore.
