I use a PS2 Dual Shock in conjunction with a Radio Shack USB adapter and it pretty much fits all my PC control needs.
I did the same thing, since the dual shock is my favorite controller anyway. I wish I knew they had the adapters at radio shak though, it would've been easier than they way I got mine. (bad ebay experience)

I don't play PC games much anymore, but when I did I liked to use a Sidewinder.

My friend uses the Radio Shack USB adaptor for the PS2 dual shocks... He seem to like it.

I personally love the Saitek P880 (wired, they have a wireless version).... Best PC game pad I have ever use, really works well with emulators and such. I hated Sidewinders and all the other logitech pads....

Yes WITH an AR you can. This lets you do it without one. This could save some people about $30.
Does that apply to XBOX controllers with XBOX to PC adapters or just controllers with the wieres switched?

I love the original gameport Sidewinder. Works fine in XP for me. I just got a USB version of the original sidewinder and have a problem with the d-pad being too sensitive. Maybe its just that my gameport version is so old and worn down that the sensitivity has been dulled (to the point where its perfect), but this USB one is almost unusable. I end up doing diagonals when I don't want to. I tried a Logitech Dual Action USB and have the same problem.

How are all these other pads people are recommending as far as d-pad accuracy goes? I need something that is responsive, but not overly sensitive - so you only do diagonals when you really want to.

I don't have one of the adapters, but I would guess that the adapter is the same thing as a homemade one with the wires switched (only made in a factory, of course).

That is the problem with ALL PC gamepads.

I just bought a Playstation USB adapter this weekend and the primary game I intended to use it for freezes when it's connected.
