"Well, it looks like I won't be returning this after all. I finally received a call back from Pelican support. I was informed definitively that, "Yes, it does support HD resolutions up to 1080i."

It looks like the runway is cleared for takeoff. I'll be setting this up tonight if anyone is still interested in impressions."
I would definitely like to hear your impressions and also measurements on the size of the unit if possible.

Thanks

Flashburn....I will try and stick in a couple of my "reference video" dvds tonight and see how they perform under my new setup. One of these dvds will be my T2 Ultimate ed dvd which I could view over and over again if only just to see the awesome video. I will look at my superbit version of The Patriot and Mask of Zorro and let you know how all of these perform. My contention will be that unless you are hooking a system up to monitors and can measure what needs to be measured.....you will not be able to notice a difference. IMO...the difference will only be in the numbers and not to the human eye. I have watched a few dvd movies since I have had my player connected via this switcher and have not noticed any loss in video performance. I have a progressive scan Panny hooked up to my 53" Pioneer Wide HDTV in case that matters. Will try and let you know over the next day or two. DJ

Can you have multiple types of inputs (say the X-Box going in Component, the DVD going in S-Video and the VCR going in regular), and just have it going out one way to the TV. I'd just go out with 1 component output if this were the case.
Or do you have to go out with S-Video if you go in with S-Vid, out with component if you go in with component, etc. In other words, will it convert multiple types of inputs to be able to go out with just one set of outputs to the TV?

Did not measure the unit but I believe the measurements are online...will look shortly. No bigger or wider then my Panny dvd player.

Viewed multiple scenes from T2......

Viewed the beginning of The Patriot where I believe the video is very pleasing with the strong colors and the cornfield etc......

IMO.....I have a nice home theater system which I will admit has never been calibrated....only calibrated with how I wish to view my movies. I believe we all have different tastes as to how we wish our systems to be set up.

Cannot do a side by side comparison but did more of an A/B comparison.

If there were differences....they were subtle at best and only measurable with instruments hooked up to the system. I believe I have some of the best equipment available when it comes to my Panny Progressive Scan Player and my Pioneer 53" HDTV set....maybe the differences would be more noticeable on lesser equipment but I would say the difference is not worth noting in relation to the human eye. Once again.....just my opinion. I was very pleased with the viewing last night....started off worried and ended my session feeling good about my purchase. I am not about to spend $300-$500 on a video switcher. Some would say their $10,000 Plasma TV is better than my Pioneer set which is most likely not true. I think it is funny when people begin using the dollar value of an item to say....you get what you pay for which is really not the case. Some of the best deals to be had are your under the radar so to speak deals on equipment which perform as good as their much higher priced competitors.

djones. Thanks for the input. Any audio or video dropouts yet?

I would love one of these, but I think they are working on one with a remote, which is the only way to go.

This is a good question. I'm curious about this as well.

I got it and have hooked the X-Box in Component, the PS2 in S-Video, and the VCR and Gamecube in with the regular yellow video plug. Now can I just go out to the TV with one component output? I just got it and the X-box worked, but VCR and GC didn't seem to.

I have this and learned the hard way that you can only have the same inputs going in as you have coming out. For example, I have Xbox, GC, and PS2 all plugged into the selector via component and going out to TV via Component. My PS2 vas originally plugged in via S-video to the selector, but did not work becasue the output to TV was via component - so I had to get a component cable for my PS2.

That's video upconversion; not many full-fledged receivers do that (the Denon 3803 does, but I can't remember any other cheaper consumer models that do). I'd be highly surprised if any system selector did it.

The Pelican does not upconvert anything. It is simply a mechanical switch for each input. I would hook the Gamecube and PS2 up with component cables and use composite for the VCR only. This way you only need to switch inputs on the TV for component or composite. All of your audio inputs should be switch with the Pelican and sent to your receiver. This way you don't need to make any selections there.

So is there any signal degrading if I have all 3 types of outputs always coming out of the selector into the TV? I don't want to constantly have to pull and switch outputs.

So I can still hook up say a DVD player, Xbox, Cube, and PS2 with component cables and then my Saturn + SegaCDX with S-Video cables, and my NES/SNES with composite cables, as long as I have connections for all 3 types to my tv, correct?

What are the model numbers for your DVD player and HDTV? What kind of HDTV is it - I'm guessing a CRT RPTV? If it is, I seriously recommend you get it professionally calibrated by an ISF tech. Supposedly a professional calibration is recommended yearly, but at the very minimum you should get it done once. It makes a big difference!

I am a member over at hometheaterspot.com and realize the calibration would make a difference but at $500 or $600...I can live with what I have now. What I do need to do is get the Avia disc which I keep putting off....

I believe mine came with a dreamcast tab. I'll have to double check.

No Dreamcast tab, but there are misc. tabs, if I remember correctly...

Did dreamcast ever have component outputs? I know it had some kind of computer monitor adapter... anyone know a place that even sells svideo for dreamcast?

Keeping this on topic, I've been using this system selecter for several months now. Occasionally I'll have to switch inputs back and forth to get the optical audio to come out (which might be my ancient reciever's fault), but otherwise, I'm pretty pleased. I don't have HDTV, but I do have component cables for my Xbox, PS2, and DVD, and Svideo for my Gamecube.

I did see a smaller system at Bestbuy, that didn't have as many inputs but did do component video switching, and had a remote control too. Anyone else see it or try it out?

I was just at Bestbuy today and saw the other one you are talking about fujishig. I can't remember who made it offhand though, and it was just in a cart and not on a shelf so I didn't know how much it was.

But lo and behold, in the one aisle there was an open-box system selector pro for $50, so I bought that one.

yeah, there's a 'gaming system' tab, or something along those lines.. just seems weird that there's a ps1 and n64 tab, but no dc.

no component, but YES on the s-vid. do an ebay search for dreamcast s-video cable - they're DIRT cheap.

Mine didn't come with a dreamcast tab. I just used the "game console" tab.
