Sony PS2 repair
For those of you who have had problems with their PS2, you can get it fixed for free. I kept getting the read disc error on the blue bottom discs and the disc tray started to stick occassionally. I called Sony at 1-800-345-SONY (7669) and they walked me through a few steps, told me to ship it out to a service center and it would be repaired for free (minus my cost to ship it out).
Just an FYI I know I have seen others with similar problems here in the past.
It's working like a gem now and the disc tray no longer sticks nor grinds as it opens and closes.

I did try that, cleaning the lens anyway, before I sent it out. It still didn't fix the problem. I didn't try and adjust the laser eye though.

2 tries, 2 successes. I give techtv a 5 out of 5

You know, I'm at the point where I only click PS2 threads anymore so I can see how many posts it took for Gizmo to chime in with a PS2 bash. It's getting old.

Major bump on this, as I've recently had a ton of problems with my PS2. Its not a disc read error, but a grinding noise when I try and load NCAA 2005.
I've opened the system, and identified the problem. Its the rod that connects to a white piece of plastic (which is attached to the laser) which appear to not be making solid contact. After taking it apart, and bending the plastic, it started working, but only for a few days before the problem repeated.
What I'd like to know is A. will Sony still repair it for free, especially since I have already opened up the systen, and B. how long is the turnaround on a repair? Thanks a lot.

The way I understand it is that there was a class action lawsuit and Sony will fix them for free, even if they have been opened. You can call Sony at 1-800-345-SONY and tell them your problem. They will most likely have you run through a few steps (diagnosis). If it is something they will repair then they will let you know. You will ship it to an authorized Sony repair shop and should get it back within a week.
