SSX 3 Gets a 10 in PSM and A- in PLAY!!!

I don't know about the rest of you but this game looks and sound amazing. I can't wait till the 21st. Every magazing is giving it rave reviews!!

The Franchise 10-17-03 03:16 PM

I started a thread about this a while back but nobody seemed into it. I'm going to be getting it next week for PS2. Can't wait to play online! The videos on EA look amazing and the soundtrack rocks too (Higher Ground by the RHCP, and Rockstar by NERD in particular are awesome!)

Decker 10-17-03 03:25 PM

This does sound good. I'm leaning towards getting it, especially since the first review of Amped 2 likened playing it to "eating a yellow snowball".

Nefarious 10-17-03 03:29 PM

I wasn't even aware SSX3 was coming out until a week ago (I know, I know...get with the program). A sweet surprise all the same and I'm looking forward to it and Jak II both.

Check out this hands-ons article about it: http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrank...eviewid=292334

I think some people are put-off by the fact you actually need skill to play a game like this.

Sorry if this is OT!

TheMadMonk 10-18-03 08:58 PM

I have SSX Tricky, and Amped. One I loved, and look forward to the sequel. One I am really indifferent of. Okay, no more suspense...

I thought Amped blew away SSX Tricky. I know they are two different game types; Tricky is an over the top, gravity defying racing game, and Amped is more of a snowboarding sim.

Granted, Amped had me very frustrated at times, due to its difficulty, but Tricky was just another relatively boring racing game to me.

I'll probably get both (eventually), but don't see myself getting SSX 3 until it hits the bargain bins.

MoviePage 10-19-03 07:50 PM

Question about SSX 3 and release dates

I buy a lot of video games, but rarely do I buy them on their release dates, unless it's something I'm really looking forward to. In the past when I've tried to get games on their official release dates I've been told by various store employees that they don't always have the games on their shelves until a day or two after the release date.

I'm really looking forward to SSX 3 and want to get it ASAP. The official release date is tomorrow, Oct. 20, according to IGN. So, here's my question to those of you who know more about releases in various stores than I do: Will it be on shelves anywhere tomorrow? How about Wal-Mart at midnight tonight? What's my best bet?

flashburn 10-19-03 08:12 PM

That is actually its shipping date. So you could expect it in specialty shops like Electronic Boutique and Gamestop on Tuesday. Other stores like Bestbuy and Circuit City will probably get them any where between later that day or 2 days from then.

SSX 3 Xbox,GC *PS2 added later Gamespot reviews

Xbox Score 9.0

Gamecube Score 9.0

Playstation 2 Score 9.0
They labeled it the best out of the 3. Most likely because of the online portion of the PS2 version

Last paragraph same in all reviews

SSX 3 delivers a rush like few racing games or action sports games have ever achieved. The game's new, open-ended structure, excellent audio, enhanced trick system, and improved graphics combine to make this a superlative sequel to a series that's always had high standards. Regardless of whether you've played SSX or care much about snowboarding, you'd be doing yourself a favor by checking this game out.

darkside 10-20-03 10:07 PM

This game looks to be the only Snowboard game to get. It will probably kill Amped 2 and 1080.

Gallant Pig 10-20-03 10:09 PM

open-ended structure
So it's not a racing game anymore?

Edit: it still says racing game, but the open ended has me intrigued.

Gallant Pig 10-20-03 10:11 PM

Guys I'm expecting a lot of threads on SSX which looks pretty cool, let's keep the discussion of reviews and the game in here, thanks.

Sorry about starting the second thread, forgot about this one and didn't check for it :(. Will try to remember the next time. :)

Thanks for transplanting it, saw this thread then started looking for mine to do the same and delete the other one hehe.

Jeraden 10-20-03 11:03 PM

They shows Amped 2 on X-Play the other night and it looked great. I loved the original. Only SSX I ever played was Tricky, and I really didn't care for it all that much.

TheMadMonk 10-21-03 12:16 AM

Well, I wasn't too interested in this one (see my post above for why), but after seeing a commercial for it, my interest has increased somewhat. The game looks better, more realistic, and the "open-ended"ness of it is a big plus (basically, it looks like they took some good cues from Amped).

At first I thought I might be seeing an Amped 2 commercial. The character they showed looked cool, and I didn't see any crazy "break-dancing" moves on a snowboard, which I thought were pretty lame in tricky.

CreatureX 10-21-03 01:25 AM

Anyone know if SSX 3 supports 4-player split-screen multiplayer?

I'm sure those crazy breakdancing moves AND MORE will be included in this game. I actually enjoyed that aspect of SSX Tricky. Some of the tricks looked pretty damn cool. It's supposed to be un-realistic... it's a video game.

Yeah, the gamespot review said that even with the changes it is still basically an trick-based racing game. So, my interest has gone back down. I'll probably get it when it gets cheap.

The tricked based "Boost" was the main selling point of the SSX series... It was copied by other games and considered revolutionary and was why it was THE game to get when PS2 first came out.

Just checked my FedEx Tracking and it's arrived. When I get home, It'll be grinding rails and big air bonuses. Getting "boosts" for knocking down other player is my favorite. Reminds me of Road Rash (... maybe SSX should incorporate weapons? But they'd loose their E rating)

The Franchise 10-21-03 12:58 PM

Just picked it up at lunch and played a bit. Will take some getting used to after SSX. I never played Tricky. Still seems fun and the tricks and graphics are great. Fell a bit more since the tricks and recoveries are timed differently. Didn't get too deep into it, but the interface and presentation are top-notch from my brief initial impression. I was the first one to pick it up from my local Gamestop. :) More impressions to come.

Galanthas 10-21-03 01:14 PM

It's gonna be tough reading this thread and the Castlevania thread while waiting for Sunday to arrive. :(

PS2 gamespot review added to post with the other 2 reviews.

MasterofDVD 10-21-03 05:07 PM

Looked for it today at a few places. Had no luck at all.

I was hoping Toys R Us would of made a huge mistake and would of received it on time so I could get in on the deal they have going on. Then I started to look around and didn't even see 2 other titles I really had to have. I was so bummed after that I just blew all my money on DVDs.

I'll probably wait a bit to get it now. My friends aren't interested in this game and I was gonna get it right away so we'd have a new party game. Since it's just for me I'll wait and save the money. But I am glad the reviews are so positive.

good game so far

The Franchise 10-22-03 09:44 AM

Damn you EA Big! *drips Visine in his bloodshot eyes* This game is awesome. It feels like GTA with a snowboard (cliche, I know, but that's what it feels like). There is so much to do that it's a bit overwhelming at first, but taking it a step at a time makes it more manageable for my brain to comprehend. Superpipe is an amazing addition. Still haven't mastered the uber tricks yet since they take a little longer to pull off timing wise. I'm playing with Psymon.

I agree. Being able to go anywhere, whenever you want is awesome. I enjoy just boarding down the mountain finding all of the BIG Challenges. I have only completed a couple though so far. This game is really huge. You can easily become lost and find yourself in a brand new area. Superpipe is also awesome. Plus the new ability to do hand plants on anything rail like is pretty sweet too. I haven't really figured out the rail ubers yet but I will. More later...

FlashStash 10-22-03 10:36 AM

Can owners offer more insight into the play mechanic of starting different events by going wherever you want? Let's say I just want to work my way through the races like in Tricky. What happens if I ski past that point on the mountain that starts the race?

There are big signs that tell you where you need to go to enter events. The cool thing is that there is stuff to do just exploring these "interim" areas as well! Rails and money points etc. If you miss something you want to do, just whip out your PDA/phone (pause menu) and warp to a point. It's pretty easy to navigate although I have entered events I didn't intend to just because I missed a turn. But that adds to the exploratory (sp?) nature of the game. You never know what's next.

I haven't figured out how to actually enter a BIG challenge. I'm supposed to race Mac in the back country but can't seem to find him. Haven't tried the handplants yet either. A long weekend would be nice right about now!

DARTH GAMER 10-22-03 11:24 AM

Flash,
When you are boarding around, you will come across events that you can ski up to or signs that will direct you to various events. You then have the option to ski past them and free ride or join in. if you miss an event, each mountain peak has a few lodges that you can go to and take a lift to various events. it will basically drop you at the begining of the free run and you ski down till you get to it again. Each peak has various track runs that you can go down like a real ski mountain and you pick which one you would like to get dropped off at with the lift. In the lodge, they give you a list of events and big challenges tht you are able to go to at that moment. SO, after all of that, you can always get anywhere you want really easy just by getting to a lodge. I think you can push start to transport anywhere too but I'm not too sure. Ive never wanted to do that because free boarding is so much fun in itself. Plus, while your free riding, you also get money for doing tricks and finding various gems so you can buy skill points and items. Great game all around.

DARTH GAMER 10-22-03 11:28 AM

While your boarding around in freeride, you will see green beams of light. ski into them and you will enter a BIG challenge. also, when you go to a lodge after Mac comes up to you, a new event will be available for you to warp to.

I saw the Playstation 2 version of this game at my local EB and noticed a THX logo on the back cover and under it (in small text) "certified game". Is this a first or has THX been certifying games for some time now? What next? THX Certified game systems?

OK, you convinced me, I picked it up at lunch!

I have a PS2 and a Game Cube and can't decide which system to get this game for. I've heard that the Game Cube has better visuals, but I'm already familiar with the PS2 control scheme from previous SSX games. Does anybody here prefer the Game Cube control scheme that has played the previous games on PS2?

Also, I've got a PS2 with the notorious disc read error problem. It seems to do DVD-ROM games fine, though. Has anyone had disc read problems with their PS2 versions of SSX3? Thanks!

Don't have the game yet(Sunday is so far off). Most likely the PS2 version is gonna control better between the two mostly because of the 4 shoulder buttons instead of 2 on the GC controller.

You should call Sony up and tell them you are getting Disc Read Errors, 95% chance they will fix it for free. Just deny using in third party devices and answer yes when they ask if you tried diagnostic mode. I sent my first one in and received it back within 4 days completely fixed for free.

Lampei 10-22-03 01:45 PM

I've heard before of people having somewhat more difficulty with the GC controller than the PS2, as the controls seem to almost be designed more with a PS2 in mind (I guess that makes sense as it was one of the initial release games for PS2). I think the button setup on the PS2 is perfect, but I've never played the GC version so I can't really comment on that (other than what I've heard :D)

handle 10-22-03 01:47 PM

I bought this yesterday and played about an hour. I like it.

The controls seem more responsive than previous SSX games.

I do wish it had a clearer "Enter a race, win and unlock the next race" structure available.

You can play it like that if you don't like riding around looking for events. Just go to your PDA and warp to a particular event. It'll still drop you to freeride, but you'll be right in front of the event you chose and just have to board up to it.

Thanks for explaining the BIG challenge thingy. The manual didn't explain this very well and I didn't have the patience to read the FAQ's in my virtual PDA.

So does Super UBER do anything besides giving you unlimited boost for a while? I haven't noticed the UBER tricks being different in super UBER mode.

I noticed it as well. When the game comes up, the THX thing comes on. I thought it was strange. 1st time Ive seen it.

Shilex 10-22-03 10:28 PM

Yep, this is the very first THX certified game. It sounds great too (on the XBox version that I have).

Quick question. How the heck do I get back to the Lodge to upgrade my character after I've already done some races or showoffs? It just takes me back to the transport menu, where I can do more races, showoffs, or freeride. But I have no clue how to get to the lodge. I have to quit the game and restart it for it to bring me to the part of the mountain where I can board into the lodge. Do I just go into freeride and ride around till I find it? I feel like an idiot.
