Can someone explain the Dynasty Warriors series to me
So far I've only played DW3 on the Xbox and DW4 on the PS2[1]. They were just rentals so I didn't play the "out" entirely, just enough to get a feel for them. Within the game itself 4 seems to add a more customization and a few added bonuses (for instance I don't think sword leveling was in 3). However, the story lines/battles seemed very similar. So is each version just an updated/rehash of the same overall story (theoretically w/ better game play/graphics)? Does it make sense to purchase 3 & 4? I've noticed 3 hasn't really dropped in price much, as one would expect when a new "version" comes out. Also how do the "Extreme Legends" (only available for the PS2 I believe, right?) fit into it? Finally (trying to avoid a console war but looking for input) the game play on the Xbox seemed smoother than on the PS2. A couple of times the PS2 would slow down (although that could have just been a "style effect" or something) and the KO#s were definately greater on the Xbox. Has anyone else played them on both, what are your feelings about it?
Any input would be appreciated.
[1] I've also played Dynasty Tactics 1 & 2 on the PS2 but that series makes a little more sense

The thing about the story and battles is that its based off a Novel, which in turn was based on actual Chinese history. You can't really change the story too much there when you're working with something as concrete as actual history.
So yes each version is basically a rehash of the same game. Personally I liked a few things they did better in 3 than 4, but overall there are basically the same game so unless you really want to own both of them, you'd probably be better off just buying 4 if you wanted the game.
Extreme Legends is akin to an expansion pack to PC games. You can play the game without owning the original, but Extreme Legends for 3 was "stripped down" compared to 3 alone. Meaning a lot of things that were accessible in 3, weren't accessible in Legends unless you had 3 to "unlock" all that in Legends.
As far as for the systems, I've basically heard they run the same, with the X-box version only being slightly better. The slowdowns are there mainly because theres too much activity going on screen at once and the system just can't handle it.
Dynasty Tactics didn't make sense how? Its a strategy type game so its much different from Dynasty Warriors. The story in this game has more of a what if feel to it, so the story changes depending on what you do in game.

As far as differences between 3 and 4 go, Dynasty Warriors 3 had an option for Japanese audio (the English dubbing is just lame), whereas Dynasty Warriors 4 only has English audio.

If you want different style of gameplay of the Dynasty Warriors series with same story, play Koei's original game of it.
