Why didn't Ratchet and Clank get more hype?

I didn't contradict myself at all. It's my favorite genre, and so far R&C, Mario Sunshine, and Jak and Daxter are the only ones I've played and liked, with R&C the only one of those that is great.
I'm looking forward to trying Sly Cooper and R&C 2, no interest in Jak 2.
So that's a total of 5 platformers so far this gen that interest me, 4 of which are on the PS2 and only one that I've played that I'd rate as great (hopeuly Sly and R&C2 will join that list).
That's lacking IMO. It's my favorite genre, I'd like to see 5 or more good ones a year.

IMO there are quite a few decent platformers currently out:
Ape Escape 2
Pac Man World 2
Jak and Daxter
Ratchet and Clank
Maximo
Sly Cooper
Rayman 3
And these are only for the PS2. Not to mention three of these titles have sequels coming out very soon.

Rayman 3 (and I believe Pac Man World 2) aren't exclusive to the PS2, so I don't count them. Plus they're both mediocre at best, which is why I didn't list them.
Maximo is more of an action game, but I didn't like it either.
Ape Escape 2, I haven't played yet, but I didn't care for the original.
But really, it's just a matter of opinion. I realize there's a decent amount of platformers out there, I just have extremely high standards for games. They're expensive, if I don't personally rate it at least an 8/10 I feel like I got ripped off. Plus I don't have a lot of time for games, so I don't like to waste my time with anything other than AAA quality titles.

From what I've seen of R&C, it looks really good. I applaud the developers for getting it to run consistently at 60 frames per second, which should be the rule rather than the exception for this generation but isn't.

OMG! Can I just say that I just played the demo for R & C Commando and I take back everything I said about it being more of the same. Well, mostly anyway. It's hella hard. But it plays great. There's a mini level of Mecha-Clank on a small spherical world that kicks ass. It's tough to beat the other mech. The regular gameplay level is also very hard. They've obviously upped the enemy AI a lot. Now enemies hide behind walls and barriers and lay in wait for you. It's good you get tons of hit points because you'll need them. The new straif feature is also very useful. No question, this one will take me a while to finish, but it's just rocketed to the top of my most wanted. I almost missed the demo, though. It's free at Best Buy, but you could miss it because it's supposed to be a video for Jak 2. Keep on the lookout for this :

Cool, I'll have to look for that. I just got my first free issue of gamepro, and it had a nice preview for R&C II. It definitely sounded like a good evolution, actually improving elements of the first game, rather than changing it to a whole different type of game like Jak II

I went to my local BB in Lansing,IL today to pick that R&C2 demo up. It rang up 4.99, it clearly says not for resale and I told them it should be .1 or free but no go. I'm not about to pay $5 for a demo. Before you say,"well it goes towards the actual game purchase price", don't bother. The problem with that is what if I didn't like the demo(I'm buying Jak2 and R&C2 so this is hypothetical), I couldn't get that $5 back from Best Buy unlike Gamestop and EB which I did today with Rebel Strike. They were also selling the RS demo disc and a PS2 Prince of Persia disc for $5 as well.
That Best Buy has always sucked. When I purchased Pokemon Ruby there when it was released they wouldn't give me one of those coins, they said I had to buy it for $5 because it was rare and *collectible* which is total BS heh.

Weird. I just walked out of my BB with 2 copies (one for me, one for a friend) and they didn't say anything. I even showed the guy at the door what I had and he didn't say anything. I didn't purchase a game either...I figured as it had not for resale that it was a free demo.
The alarms didn't go off, so I guess I was ok.
I agree, though, it is much harder than the first R&C, but the game plays fantastic. The "weapon development" is a very nice new feature, especially when you reach the max for that weapon. The sniper rifle is awesome! And the little guys that fly along side you shooting everything...ah, it's just got so many amazing weapons
See if you can go back and just pick it up for nothing...I didn't see any prices on it at my BB.

Free at my BB, too. Also thought it is harder. My main gripe is that you don't have the option to reverse the camera control in the demo, so it was backward from what I am used to (and thus made it even harder)

I picked it up last week for $14.99 at Best Buy w/ coupon, and I have to say I'm blown away.
I love platformers, and it's far and away the best one I've played this generation. Great level design, lots of variety with all the weapons and gadgets, pretty good character design (especially compared to Jak and Daxter and other crappy characters in platformers this generation).
If you like platformers and haven't played this yet it's a terrific game, especially for that price.

It's definitley one of the more "fun" platformers. I mean, there's a gun that turns enemys into chickens!! How cool is that!

R&C is quite fun.
After SMS I was ready to swear off platformers, but this reminded me why I used to love the genre. Charming characters, enjoyable combat, logical progression and just the right amount of platforming.
My only complaints would be that the control is kind of floaty, definitely not up to par with Nintendo's usual level of crispness and the camera isn't as responsive as I'd like.
Overall, I am thrilled with this game for $15.

I just got Ratchet and Clank a few days ago. It *rules*.
I generally have stayed away from platformers since the move to 3D. R&C, however, intrigued me when it first came out due to the buzz surrounding it. It was supposed to be a somewhat slower-paced, more thoughtful platformer with some RPG elements. After playing the game, this seems to be the case, and I love it. It's not as mindless and generic as many of the current-gen games I've played.
I've played it for about 4.5 hours so far. In my book, that rates it as a success; I often have trouble staying interested with video games. I think the other thing that I like about it is the lack of frustration I've experienced. You don't really get punished for dying, you have unlimited continues, and there's no stupid time limit.

You do get punished for dying in some places, as occasionally you'll get to a tough area and the start back point is pretty far away, so the punishment is spending 10 minutes going through the same crap to die and do it all over again.
But those spots are few and far between and I'm still loving the game. I'm pretty far along, just got to the moon base level after destroying the missile.

Add me to the list of R&C fans. I picked it up last year the day it came out just based on what little i read in magazines/online and needless to say i was blown away.
But let's not forget the great Maximo-Ghosts To Glory is right up there with R&C as the two greatest platformers for the PS2. And the best part is that they both have sequels coming out in the next couple of months....
