Half-Life 2 delayed until April 2004 :(

From CNN:

PARIS (Reuters) - The theft of part of its source code has delayed until April 2004 the launch of "Half Life II," the hotly anticipated alien-hunting game of Vivendi Universal Games, a company official said.

"A third of the source code was stolen," VU Games president of international operations Christophe Ramboz told daily Les Echos in its Tuesday edition. "It's serious because it forces us to delay the launch of the game by at least four months, that is to April 2004. Just the time to rewrite parts of the game."

I'm still sure it'll hit by Christmas....the source leak was not that big of a deal. Either way, Max Payne 2 is almost out so play that until HL2

No problems here. I imagine I might be getting slightly tired of Call of Duty by that time.

Half-Life Source on Valve Visit
10/7/2003 0:45 PST | Half-Life 2 | by Fragmaster
Half-Life Source\Half-Life Radio has reported on the results of their visit to Valve. Here's a bit of what they had to say:

Our exclusive visit with Gabe Newell and Valve Software did confirm that only a SMALL PORTION of the source code was taken. This is different than most of the reports. The entire source was not taken. Straight from Gabe Newell.

No Mention Of Half-Life 2 Delay. So far Half-Life 2 is shipping for the HOLIDAYS.

It appears that Valve Software is really close to getting the hackers. They seem to have their names written on a whiteboard. It's no wonder that it's business as usual at Valve!
"

Also to me, it doesnt seem to make any sense for them to rewrite parts of the code, unless it was to stop cheaters. Since if they were to rewrite tech code it wouldnt matter assuming the original tech code worked, atleast as far as outside sources having the code..

Anyway, I would take that Reuters/Cnn article with a grain of salt until the developers over at Valve say anything.

yeah not sure what it means that they have to "rewrite" code. Isn't it just that someone stole something already programmed into the game? Shouldn't they want to get the game out sooner, before pirated software starts popping up?

There is no way a 'pirated' version of Half-Life 2 would show up using the stolen code, unless all of the assets (art, music, models etc) were stolen as well.

Hopefully we'll get some clarification from Valve about if this delay is true or not.

Also have to wonder how ATI is going to feel about this delay? I thought it was a big deal for them that you could get HL2 free with their latest 9800xt and 9600xt video cards...

Anyone think this is an stunt to draw press attention and be able to delay the game without looking bad?

Are you referring to the source being stolen? I highly doubt this is a stunt, but rather all the attention it is giving Half-Life 2 is just a positive side-effect to a rather bad situation. Then again, who knows...

Really don't think this is a big conspiracy here as what has happened is a big deal. And if it turns out to be a 4month delay, it's not all that bad. Seems like it's the norm for game developers to have slips towards the end of development, some of which are much more then just 4 months.

Whoa. There's some more seriously bad news for Valve if it's true. A supposed BETA copy of Half-Life 2 is making the rounds today in some of the more nefarious corners of the internet. I've seen screenshots that look pretty convincing and people who have claimed to have it say it's very playable despite constant error messages popping up in the console section of the screen. Of course it could all be BS, but if not it's just sad to see this happen to Valve.

Not really a beta copy as someone would have had to created all the resources (maps, models, sounds, etc) since the only thing available (AFAIK) is the source code.

I think he's trying to say it is unrelated to the source code theft. It was a separate theft/leak.

I don't believe that it's a stunt, but I can easily see Valve exploiting the attention factor. But I do believe that Valve is using it as their excuse for their delaying HL2. They had already missed their Sept 30 release date before the code was released and if it had been finished, it would have gone gold in the middle of September.

As for delaying it to "rewrite code because of cheating":
  • They can make patches to fix that (and they will, even after they've finished "rewriting" it)
  • I thought the whole point of being forced to use Steam was to prevent cheating & theft.

More info from neowin.net:

Today the Half Life 2 Beta leaked across the world onto the internet via IRC channels. The release by "anon" shows it's obvious that the hackers who managed to sucessfully steal source code of the game itself also stole the game itself and who knows what else.

Today there are reports that Half Life 2 has been put back to 2004 due to the source code leaks, although these reports haven't been officially denied by Valve or confirmed. This latest leak of the game itself is sure to hit Valve hard.

Ouch. If this really is true, it's been a bad couple weeks for Valve.

Has any game studio EVER had a month as bad as Valve? I really feel sorry for those guys...even if they shouldve known better and not had their goods on a computer with internet access.

So much for those saying the theft of the source code wasn't a big deal and wouldn't cause a delay in the other thread.

A drag for sure if this turns out to be true. To be honest though, code leak or not, I didn't think this title was going to ship this year.

Not comfirmed yet

"Nothing official from Valve as of yet, but I would expect to hear something soon as it is now almost 9am on the Coast. We are getting some off-the-record comments this morning that the report below by Reuters may not be accurate for USA distribution. Contacts in the USA are reporting things contrary to the article. I would suggest that we all wait for the official word from Valve on all of this. So let’s all uncurl our panties while we wait for what Gabe Newell has to say."
