It's a role-playing game... as far as I understand it, it's the Star Wars universe adapted to Dungeons & Dragons-type rules. So it's neither of the choices you offered... it's more along the lines of Final Fantasy or Dungeon Warrior.
And geez, you couldn't think up a better example of a thinking type game than Splinter Cell?

tommy, trust me : It's really good. Cool too. It's an RPG, but a very open ended one with a lot of action to it. If you're at all into Star Wars, you'll love it. It's the reason I finally got my Xbox. It's not like SC at all, but still a good game. Graphics aren't in the same league, though.

KOTOR actually has a few math puzzles in it, but overall it's a roleplaying game. The closest equivalent would be Neverwinter Nights on PC.

Playing KOTOR, I saw so many things that reminded me of NWN, plus the fighting, conversation, and gaining levels were the same.

Not really a puzzle or thinking game. I never got stuck once playing throug it. There are a few puzzles, but they're all fairly simple, and it's a fairly linear game as you always know where to go next for the most part (though sometimes you don't know which quests you have to do and which are optional).
