I just started playing this game, and I'm wondering if there's any way you can change your name? I tried going through all the options but I can't seem to find a clue. Am I really dense, and it's possible to change your name (tell me how), or am I stuck with the name I started with?

Do a search or check gamefaqs. This is a common problem that people have when they buy a used copy. You have to press some weird combination of buttons, that for the life of me, I can't remember. I had the same problem and went to gamefaqs and found out how to reset the game.

Try pushing and holding L R select then turn it on.

ok, i found out...

hold down the L trigger, press right on the directional pad, and the select button while turning it on.

it will ask if you want to delete all saved info.

L + Right Direction + Select + Turn on
