Final Fantasy 3 anytime soon?
Has anybody heard if FF3 is being ported anytime soon. I am still working on having every Final Fantasy game ever made, with the exception of FFXI.
I have:
Final Fantasy Origins (1,2)
Final Fantasy Chronicals (4)
Final Fantasy Anthology (5,6)
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy X
Soon to be getting FFX-2. I am not including FF Tactics, mystic quest, etc in this list, just the primary titles. My favourite by far is FF6(3 in north america) and FF4(2 in na). Those were the rpg titles that started it all for me.
How would you rank these titles in order from ascending order. I can't comment on 1,2,5,8, and 9. Ok, I got a little FF happy one day at EB games.

FF VI (III in the US) is the best, hands down. FF IV (II in the US) comes in at a close second. FF V is next, followed by the Japanese III, than I, and finally II.
The rest are pure green steaming diseased shit.

working on "having" them or finishing them? 'cause i have all of them too but have finished only 2 (7 and X)... i tried playing Anthology and just couldn't do it...
so based on that, i'd say, VII is the best, followed by X.

Hopefully Square-Enix will do Final Fantasy III for the GBA. I would have preferred FF: Origins on the GBA rather than a PS1 title.

The Origins title would've been 100 times smarter to put on the GBA, espically considering how late into the PSone's life they DID release it.. but they insisted on adding pointless, retarded, non-game related CG movies to them.

I disagree. In the years to come, I would much rather have it on a system that can utilize a television and capture the moments again as I did as a teen. Besides, the Nintendo/Square deal wasn't in effect yet. It's nice to hear some people aside from yself really enjoy IX. A tribute of sorts to those who began playing 1, 2 & 3. I thought it was an incredible title.

Who was in FF3? I forgot, I think I'm getting all of them confused. Was FF3 the one w/ Kain and Meteo?

Final Fantasy IV is still my favorite. It's not as playable as FFVI, but it's one of the best stories i've ever experienced in an RPG. If you get the chance, you MUST play the fan-translated FFII hard version. It makes the experience so much more worthwhile. It also puts to shame Square's hack job in FF Chronicles.
Final Fantasy V's story wasn't as bad as most people made it out to be. The game is fun but the job system is archaic now...it's much better implemented in games like FFT. Not one of my favorites.
FFVII really disappointed me, but i still had fun while i was playing it. The only reason i still like it is because there hasn't been an RPG released since that is anywhere near as good as it was, which is sad.
FFVIII i had a lot of fun playing, i thought it had a lot of novel concepts, that given a little tweaking, would have made it a spectacular game. The story really sucked though, and the characters were extremely boring.
FFIX was just boring, and utterly pointless. It was nothing more than fan-service.
FFX was the worst RPG i've ever played. Hey Square, the next time you make an RPG don't make the main hero a jock; many of your fans were picked on by them!
Not looking forward to FFX-2.

Panzer Dragoon Saga
Grandia II
Skies of Arcadia
Persona 2
Xenogears
Vagrant Story
And that's just the top tier of RPGs...I can probably list another twenty which are just as good as FF VII.

Both FFIX and FFX were much better than FFVII. Then there was Chrono Cross, Xenogears, Valkyrie Profile, Castlevania: SOTN(yes, I consider it an RPG), Suikoden I, II, & III, Skies of Arcadia, Knights of the Old Republic, and Golden Sun just to name a few others. I enjoyed all those titles more than FFVII and I would say KOTOR is the best RPG I've played since FFVI.
I agree with you on FFIV. That title is still my favorite....FFVI was probably the best RPG I've ever played but I didn't spend nearly the time playing it that I did on FFIV. When I purchased it back in 1991 it was like my first big game purchase on the SNES. I enjoyed FF1 on the NES and was looking forward to another Final Fantasy game. I remembered shelling out $69.99 + tax for it at this game outlet store in the mall(wasn't EB or Software Etc.). I must have played that game through about 20+ times, got all characters to 99, got the pink tail
(actually discovered that one if any of you remember Prodigy
). The story was great and it was just a blast to play thru. I've never played another RPG through a second time since FFIV but then again I was still living at home and didn't have a wife and kids
.I remember reading something about the FFIV version in Japan being more difficult and I thought the version Square used in FF: Chronichles was that version? No? I have Chronicles just I haven't found time to play thru FFIV again. So, I take it you played the more challenging version in Japanese?

I actually agree with the statement that there hasnt really been a great RPG since Final Fantasy 7. Granted, i havent played very many since i don't own console systems, but i've played a few PSX games thanks to PSX emulators like Chrono Cross and Vagrant Story. I couldn't get into either of them and didn't play through either game. I tried Grandia 2 when it was ported to PC and wasn't impressed either. FF8 was alright and the love story was a nice change of pace, but the Junction system was terrible. FF9 was fun to play, but nothing new.
Chrono Trigger is my favorite RPG, but FF3/6 is also right there as one of the best ever.

Yes, i'm more than well aware of the various RPGs that have come out since that time...
Chrono Cross - the story was extremely boring and none of the characters were even nearly as well developed as the ones in FFVII. Massively overrated.
Xenogears - too many battles that are too complex, too slow, and too tedious. The story is also dumb. Same goes for Xenosaga.
Vagrant Story - who decided to make an Action/RPG hybrid where you have to hit something over 40 times at the highest levels?
Persona 1 and 2 - haven't played.
Valkyrie Profile - Dull. Same goes for Tales of Destiny, Star Ocean: The Second Story, and Dragon Warrior VII. Not only were they repetitive as hell, they're old-school in the worst ways. They don't even play as good as FFVI.
Suikoden as a series i don't consider to be as strong as it could have been because the story is so underdeveloped, and the dialog can get tedious. The battle systems in all 3 games were also horrible, and i don't know why the removed the large army battles from the 3rd game.
Grandia I and II - Grandia, even on the Saturn, i always felt was overrated as a whole, only made dear to the hearts and minds of gamers because of it's status as the underdog. Grandia II had horribly annoying characters and a boring, typical, predictable plot. Uh.
Panzer Dragoon Saga - why pay $150 + on ebay used when you can get a game that's almost 5 times the length, and much better, for that matter, for $15 new?
Skies of Arcadia - why am i not surprised that the team behind the Phantasy Star series (at least 1, 2, and 4) put nearly a bajillion battles in this game where you earn scant amounts of experience?
Golden Sun and it's sequel are nearly unplayable. You don't even start the first game until well over 2 hours of dialog! pointless. And the constant yes/no questions that Camelot LOVES putting into it's games was taken way too far this time. Dull, and utterly unstatisfying, only made popular by it's fantastic graphics and old-school flavor.
Lunar Legend - did we really need a 3rd release of Lunar: Eternal Blue?
Lufia - Not even comparable to previous Lufia games. Also very graphically weak.
Phantasy Star Collection - where's PSIV?
KOTOR i consider more of an American-style RPG, whereas i was speaking more of Japanese-style RPGs.

I don't see how anyone who likes to play RPG's would have so many negative comments about so many great games. All those games had good storylines...and to me that is what makes an RPG, not the pretty graphics. I guess 'to each his own'.

Finally somebody who agrees with my distaste of Goldsen Sun, or as I call it, Golden Textbook. I would imagine that the text would not be so bad if there was a way to scroll through it past the reading level of a second greader, and the SINGLE most annoying thing, second place to all the shitty movies and summons spells of Final Fantasy, is how after EVERY single box of dialouge, the characters twitch thier heads, or animate is some asanine way, which adds nothing to the game or story other than further delays from the game. My roommate beat it in I think 30 hours, and admitted that it would've been 20 if the dialouge system wasn't so clunky.
Too bad.. it looks like a fun game otherwise.

I didn't enjoy Golden Sun in the least. The puzzles were either impossibly esoteric or rediculously elementary. Like you said, the repetitive and time-consuming mannerisms blew. Also, the Djinnies made combat super-easy.

The Final Fantasy series lost a little bit of steam for me when they went with the polygon characters and the 3D-rendered backgrounds. I still like the games, but definately prefer to play through the SNES-era FF games rather than the new ones.

See, i don't understand why people think that just because Square poured so much energy into the game's graphics that the game is necessarily bad. FFVI and Chrono Trigger were both masterpieces of 16-bit graphic design, and they were both excellent games to boot.

- Swirling camera at the beginning of battles - In a game with as many random battles as FF, the swirling camera at the beginning of every battle starts to become tedious.
- Full summon animation - The later FF's have handled this better by just showing the full animation the first time.
- 3D rendered backgrounds - They just look blurry to me and aren't quite as beautiful as the 2D art of the SNES games.
Again, I still dig the gameplay of the FF series, I just prefer the art and feel of the SNES games.
