Well, I didn't say the games were bad, in fact I still enjoy the series. FFX was one of the best FF's I think (and I swear I'm going to make it through FFVIII one day). It's just a combination of little things like...
  • Swirling camera at the beginning of battles - In a game with as many random battles as FF, the swirling camera at the beginning of every battle starts to become tedious.
  • Full summon animation - The later FF's have handled this better by just showing the full animation the first time.
  • 3D rendered backgrounds - They just look blurry to me and aren't quite as beautiful as the 2D art of the SNES games.

Again, I still dig the gameplay of the FF series, I just prefer the art and feel of the SNES games.

Just remember that games like FFVII were made relatively early in the now-standard 3D era. A comparable game would be FFIV. The game was made before developers really knew how to get every ounce of energy out of the SNES.

Funny thing i read in this month's EGM:

FFX: Greatest Hit or Miss?

Final fnatasy X has everythign RPG fans could want: beautiful graphics, top-notch voice acting, and a gripping story that even makes some of the EGM staff members teary-eyed. Such praise has even led to the first ever sequel in the legendary role-playing series....

Sure they're right about the graphics, but that's about it. Top-notch voice acting? why, how you could beat such stellar dialogue in the vein of the brilliant Tidus's soliloque "need...fire!!!"? and a story that amounts to little more than...well, the story made no sense whatsoever.
