I wish I had written this myself.

As an aside, in the past couple of days, I had quickly looked through some of last year's game magazines and saw that, at that time, there was a little bit of hype for Tomb Raider building.

Eidos successfully deflated that, though, with its delays and skimpy press coverage this year, so you are correct in saying it wasn't even overhyped in the end (which means I was wrong for saying the opposite a few posts back ).
But in the beginning it was overhyped. The head honchos were all praising themselves and saying how they dropped the ball and how this was going to be so revolutionary and how this would save the series and anyone who played it from a lifetime in purgatory. (okay that last bit is made up).

But then the delays came. and then some more delays. Heck they even put Nintendo to shame. The difference...Nintendo usually comes out with a good product.

I do hope you are kidding. How can a game bog down when it takes less then three hours to beat? I still play this game and still think it is the best in the series and/or genre.

Definately an unpopular opinion.

7. Resident Evil. Some of the sequels have evolved to the point of playability, but the insulting puzzles, leaden dialogue, and never-get-used-to-it control scheme always made the appeal of this game an enigma to me.
I can understand the animosity towards this series but I have always throughly enjoyed them. The controls are crap and you never really get used to them but this is one of those few times were that doesn't matter. at least to me. I have always enjoyed their stories and never get tired of a licker/zombie dog/crows/whatever smashing through the window. The graphics are really incredible too.

And Arrianna Huffington is telling me she'd make a great Governor. What the head honchos are spewing to the media isn't hype, it's spin. I never read a single article that wasn't highly skeptical of the next Tomb Raider project. There was no gushing (like there was with Blinx after E3). I don't recall a lot of glitzy advance profiles a' la Enter The Matrix. Nothing that constitutes "hype" in my book.

The rest of the list (1-5) is now up. The #1 slot should come as no surprise to anybody.

Quake 2..

Still the most fun FPS for LAN parties IMO.

Pixy,

I know you can't see the article but they do clarify that they are talking about the game as shipped before the multiplayer levels were made available.

I'm wondering : Did anyone here ever play Daikatana? I haven't, but given its rep, I just avoided it and didn't even hear reviews about it when it finally came out. I always had a feeling that it was probably (warning : more movie analogies) the video game equivalent of Ishtar : monumentally terrible by reputation but actually just sub-mediocre in reality.

I never heard that entire backstory about Ion. Interesting stuff. Does Romero have anything to do with Doom 3 (which had better be great or will rocket to the top of their next list)?

Ah.. hmm.. might make more sense then. I won't argue that there are better FPS out there, and if you get together with a bunch of gaming buddies for a LAN party, there are probably better options.. but when you get people together who don't play FPS or video games, a Q2 party can't be beat.. and always fun.

IMO

I must say the top five is by far the best they've done. All are well explained, with the appropriate mea culpas for overhyping by them. They're clear that neither MGS2 or B&W are terrible games but explain why they've changed their views on them. Maybe they should have just made this a top-five list?

Two years of hype and $10/month to visit a virtual chat room? Ummm, no thanks.

Man I really liked Black and White.

Personally I think The Sims should be on there. Talk about a game with no purpose or direction.

Of course you're right there. I give them some slack since it's the all-time best seller, and I've played it some. Yes there are some original ideas in that game too, but any game where a person can get stuck behind a rolling office chair until they DIE has some gameplay issues that needed to be addressed.
