Help Identify a SNES game!!

Okay, so a coworker of mine and I were just talking about Faxanadu and Zelda 2, and he was trying to remember this SNES game that was just like those.. he said it might've started with an A (and no it's not Actraiser), and the one thing he remember was that in the desert or something you couldn't see the monsters they were like clouds of dust and when you touched them a monster appeared..

Any ideas? Side scrolling swords and magic type game.. argh.

Nah.. Gaia is overhead, we're thinking of something side-scrolling.

I'd be interested in what the game is called so I can play it. I LOVED Faxanadu back in the day.

I know it doesn't start with an A, but could it be one of the Ys games? Another game that came to mind is Arcus Odyssey. I'm not too familiar with it, but I do remember it being an action/rpg. I don't remember the POV though.

Remember your Mantra!

The only one I can think of is Ys III? Its the only side scrolling game in the Ys series. But there weren't any dust clouds in that......

That's not it.. yeah.. I must be the only person in the world that LIKED Y's III.. but everybody knows about it. They just made an excellent remake of Y'S I & II on the PS2.. if they released it over here that might finally be the straw to get me to buy a Playstation!! (well, that and the EYETOY!)

Are you sure you're not thinking of Astyanax by Jaleco for the NES?

That's what I was going to say... but you're right, its for the NES not the SNES.

Arcana was a card based first person RPG.. I think it's more imoprtant that the game is a side-scrolling adventure like Faxanadu than it MIGHT begin with A.. argh.

This game was the sequel to wildly weird Solstice series, one of the first games done in an isometric view...

Stupid question: could it have been Actraiser 2?

Could this be it him?

Could it be ASTERISK?

Asterix (PAL)
The peace and quiet of the village of the indomitable Gauls has been disrupted by a disturbing piece of news: Obelix has disappeared... Where could Obelix be? In Greece? Or Rome perhaps? To find him you will need to travel throughout Gaul, across the Roman Empire, and as far afield as the Egyptian Pyramids... And all the time you have to battle with the Roman armies and avoid the traps set by Caesar's spies.
But he says its a PAL game? I don't know if folks imported them to the US, but it could be. It's based on that little Viking comic book guy... and after doing a search, it's also a little European film... take a look at the actors:

That's what I was about to say. Those look like really good graphics for NES. They look more like Genesis level.

I know for a fact that isn't a NES screenshot.

Here's the scan of the back of the box:
