Finally Got My PS2 Online -- Now What?

Well, even though I've had my Network Adaptor since Sept., I finally moved and got a high speed connection (thank God). Well, now I've rewired and bought a router and after some expense, I've got everything working OK. So now I'm wondering what to do. I tried Socom, but it was hard to get into a game and I found it more than a little confusing to play. I popped in my free TM:B Online disc but it won't read (sending it back to SCEA tomorrow). I tried to use Midnight Club 2 but I haven't progressed very far in the game and have no cars that are remotely decent and I was kicked out of one of the very few games active.
So what should I do? Everyone seems to love Socom, but I'm afraid I've come to the party too late. Isn't there a game that's an online fragfest where nobody minds if I stink it up for a while?

What other games are good online? Tribes? ATV Offroad 2?
Anything exciting coming out soon?

Any help would be appreciated. (And yes, I know Xbox Live is better. Maybe I'll be able to talk my wife into letting me get a second system by my next birthday or Christmas, but for now it's out of the question so please don't bring up a sore subject. )

The new game from the makers of Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance looks cool. It basically looks like BGDA with an Everquest setting and 4 player online coop play. Comes out in Nov. I think.

Go ahead and keep stinkin' it up in SOCOM. jk I'm sure you'll get the hang of it after a few days if you keep at it. Make sure to either use Precision or Scout as your controller setting, and adjust the sensitivity for character movement to your liking. Then you'll be ready for SOCOM II in October.

If you like sport games, EA's whole sports Line-up will be online for the PS2.

Including Tiger Woods Golf, Madden 2004 and NCAA 2004(which comes out next week)

I guess you're right. I'll have to read the manual to get a better idea how to play this game and then give it a try. I wish there was a room for newbies; it's disheartening to join a game and get killed in the first few seconds. The Socom sequel does look to be much improved.

Still with the huge PS2 intalled base and so many online, it's shocking that there isn't really a single online deathmatch game yet available.

As far as EA games go, I don't have any recent ones. I might pick up Madden 04 when it comes out. NBA Street isn't online, is it? That might be fun.

Get Amplitude. Online play for that is fun as hell.

I will as soon as you take a reading comprehension course.

I have Amplitude, but forgot that it plays online (I've only played the single person game). I'll give it a try!

Frankly how would this help him?

Any game online on the XBox will require him to practice and get better or else he will stink it up and be just as frustrated on Live.

Just practice and slowly you will get better with Socom.

Also try Amplitude and see how that goes for you. If you are good at sports games then I agree with the EA suggestion.

Well at least there is downloadable content ... that's the only reason I'm really contemplating Live as I don't have a ton of time to hone my gaming skills and don't want to get slaughtered either.

In any case Decker did say he only has the PS2 for the foreseeable future.

I assume you can setup games on the PS2 that are only open to specific invitees? You should post a thread here with some times you'll be online and try and hookup with some similarly skilled players. That way you won't get so frustrated and can get get thos killing skills up

I must admit to not owning an XBox so how would downloadable content help make you a better player?

meaning there is a reason to have online access that doesn't include just playing other opponents, well that is if you have an X-Box. Far as I know there is not currently downloadable content for PS2 games, even with the optional hard drive (except maybe the new Final Fantasy game that will require the PS2 HD)

Does that answer your question?

Ok - Decker already knows the benefits of Xbox Live, but he doesn't have an Xbox and can't get one right now... he wants to know about PS2 Online. Let's keep Xbox Live out of it.

Only online PS2 games that excited me were Amplitude and Socom (only moderately)...

If you can wait until next week I'll play you NCAA 2004 ... I suck though I have the same problem... when I used to play Mechassault on XBOX Live, half the team left and the other half ganged up on me.

Deb, you crack me up. I won't be getting that game, but maybe I'll see you on Madden 2004.

... Actually, having an Xbox would help because they have some online games that are more fragfests, like Castle Wolfenstein. But of course, I don't have an Xbox, as that should be well established by now.
My point was just that for expierenced gamers, squad-based online gaming is much more exciting and addicting, but it's hard for the newbies like me. I feel bad if other people are counting on me to do something and I just suck instead.

Completely off the subject, I've just moved to Las Vegas and it's hard for me to get used to everyone talking about the gaming industry; I'm thinking Sony and Nintendo, while they're talking about the casinos

I live in Vegas also

What's hard for me is that whenever I see someone sunburned I ask naturally "went to the beach?" I always get weird looks with that one. (I'm originally from FL).

Well, I paid $14 for NCAA 2003 to see if I liked it before spending $50 on 2004 and... it's going to take a while. I won't be buying it after all. If I can find a good deal on SOCOM I want to pick that up. When I pick it up want to play some games?

You bet!
It isn't too expensive if you buy a version wtihout a headset ($39.99 - $5 BB coupon). I don't think the headset is all that important and a better version is going to be sold seperately anyway (and of course that's another $5 coupon you can use right there).

You got it $35 doesn't sound bad at all. I'll be saving $15 from what I was planning to spend. I'll pick it up on Wednesday. I've never gone online with the PS2 but I'll be using the handle GatorDeb (if it's not taken...). What time is good for you?

SOCOM with a headset is an absolute necessity. It's also 10X harder than MechAssault online. I recommend beating SOCOM offline first before you get online just so you don't look too bad when you finally go online.

If you do get it, get the headset or don't bother, it's just part of the online game. Otherwise you could find yourself getting kicked out of games when they devise a team strategy and you're running around like Rambo.

Like I said, if you do go online and Mech Assault or Halo was a tough game, then get a good amount of hours under you belt until you can at least play it well. It's pretty competitive online and I can imagine at this point the quality of play is high.

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack there. I couldn't resist... I've just had preferred experiences with taking my Xbox online.

In other news, PRACTICE Socom. Only good online game besides Amplitude.

I am getting my cable modem hooked up on Monday after an 8 month wait. We moved into a new construction home in a new nighborhood in November and have been waiting for them to finish the cable ever since!! Anyways, I plan on purchasing a PS2 soon, and have a few questions. Is it still free. I have read that companies are allowed to charge on a per game basis, but that they might not charge anything. What is Socom and why do you need a headset. I have tried to keep up with the new games for the next gen systems in anticipation of the day when I actually bought one, but I have not heard of this game.

Yes, for most games. There is a monthly fee for Everquest, which is a MMORPG. There will be for FF XI, another MMORPG. Any company could charge a fee, but the rest don't

It's very popular for the PS2. It's a squad based tacticle shooter. It can be player as a single player game, but the AI is horrible. I've only tried it online briefly, but I understand the server is almost always busy with players, even though the game is a year old now. It is being sold both with a Logitec headset ($59.99) and without ($39.99). It requires a broadband connection.

One more thing: I don't know if you already know this or not, but if you're planning on uying a PS2 now and want to go online, make sure you get a new PS2 Online Packkage ($199.99) instead of the regular one ($179.99) as the modem is already included, and there are other improvements as well.

Deb: I'd love to play, but Wed won't work for me. Maybe next weekend?
